Job Summary

SUMMARY

Plans directs coordinates and oversees all functions pertaining to the operation and maintenance of the divisions transportation department. This includes personnel equipment and facilities. The primary concern is safe efficient economical transportation of students between home and school on a regular schedule and between other destinations within or outside the division boundaries on a special scheduling basis.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

-To provide for safety at all bus stops

-To establish procedures to guarantee the safety of the school bus operation compliant with mandate law and policy

-To provide training for bus drivers to guarantee safety and efficiency and as a means of obtaining CDLs

-To provide instruction in the behavior management of all students

-To provide instruction in the management of special needs students

- Oversee transportation for special needs students during the regular school year

- Oversee special transportation for summer school and other special needs circumstances

-Oversee scheduling of bus routes primarily utilizing a computerized bus routing system in the most effective manner to transport students to school in the most efficient manner

-To provide for a pool of adequately trained substitute bus drivers

-To provide personnel procedures consistent with policy to recruit hire and train bus drivers

-To collect and analyze accident data

-To provide for the maintenance of the school bus and car fleet in accordance with mandate law and policy

-To provide information about the fleet leading to the purchase of new vehicles and declaring vehicles surplus and

-To provide for appropriate fiscal management according to law and policy of all allocated funds assigned to the supervisor

-To provide for ongoing and accurate inventory and specific procedures to track and account for all items in inventory according to time and use and

-To evaluate all elements of the transportation program on a continuing basis.

-To evaluate the safety of road conditions during inclement weather and provide timely information to the superintendent.

-Other responsibilities as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the supervision and evaluation of all bus drivers mechanics transportation routing specialist and other bus garage personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Five years of experience in pupil transportation in an organization having full maintenance and operations of transportation services or similar management experience.





Experience or responsibilities in the following areas are preferred:

Supervision of personnel

Routing and scheduling

Bus driver training

Accident investigation

Bus maintenance

Inventory control

Cost accounting

Budgeting record keeping

Preparation of bus bid specifications

Must be knowledgeable of safety standards laws codes rules regulations policies and procedures relating to pupil transportation.

Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of a bachelors degree. Position incumbent must obtain within the first year of employment in the position a Virginia drivers license with a commercial drivers license a Virginia State School Bus Drivers Certificate or obtain proof of equivalent proficiency.

Incumbent is required to be a resident of Shenandoah County or become a resident within 4 months of obtaining employment in this position.

Demonstrate ability to establish cooperative relations with other division staff members subordinates students and parents.

Ability to communicate effectively.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents employees school administrators and the school board.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts interest commissions proportions percentages area circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS

Must possess or acquire a valid Virginia drivers license with a commercial drivers license a Virginia State school bus drivers certificate or provide proof of equivalent proficiency.
