Primary Purpose:
To assist in the supervision care and instruction of special needs students in the self-contained or regular classroom ; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time; providing information to appropriate school personnel
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
Desire to assist students with special needs in a learning environment Emotional maturity and stability necessary for the specialized work involved
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced and outlined by certified staff as described by an IEP
- Assists the certified staff in devising special strategies for reinforcing learning materials and skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students their needs interests and abilities.
- Assists students requiring support in addressing personal care needs as needs and/or assigned (e.g. diapering changing clothing feeding tube feeding catheterizing etc.) as written in their IEP I medical orders.
- Alerts the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
- Monitors and assists individual special education students in the classroom library playground activities community outings vocational sites public transportation system etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safety of assigned students.
- Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. restrooms playgrounds hallways bus loading zones cafeteria parking lots etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of special education students. Provides direct instruction to students under the supervision of a certified teacher for the purpose of implementing IEP goals.
- Provides verbal and/or written feedback of observations for the purpose of assisting certified teachers for the purpose of assisting certified teachers in evaluating students.
- Administers first aid for the purpose of providing emergency or necessary care in accordance with district state and federal requirements.
- Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and community.
- Participates in in-service training programs as approved.
- Maintains safe working environment and encourages colleagues to be safety minded in the performance of all school-related duties.

- Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues students and administration.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing stooping bending kneeling pushing and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks media equipment desks and other classroom or adaptive
equipment. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non ambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards.
