Overview

AtkinsRéalis is currently seeking a Materials / Metallurgist Engineer to join our Materials Welding and Chemistry Engineering Excellence team. This position is intended for an intermediatelevel professional who is selfmotivated and interested in developing their career and experience in the nuclear field.

Your role

  • Perform materials metallurgical and weldingrelated work in an engineering environment and prepare technical documents in accordance with AtkinsRéalis/Candu Energy QA programs and applicable codes standards and regulatory requirements used in the Canadian nuclear industry.
  • Provide technical guidance and support and collaborate with other entities including laboratories and other third parties.
  • Perform complex materials metallurgical and welding engineering assignments independently or under limited supervision of a senior metallurgist analyst or engineer.
  • Develop and deliver presentations as required to communicate technical status problem resolution or to support reactor components and balanceofplant equipment initiatives.
  • Coordinate and interface with clients suppliers stakeholders and other design disciplines or departments to execute assigned engineering work.
  • Support the specification design development (including preproduction qualification) assessment and manufacturing of reactor components and materials to meet the needs of existing stations.
  • Support and consultation on the manufacturing of nuclear components (e.g. steam generators heat exchangers pumps valves piping) with respect to materials selection metallurgical condition welding requirements cleanliness handling corrosion protection and inspection requirements.
  • Lead and/or support improvements to materials and manufacturing processes through materials engineering considerations.
  • Provide materials engineering support for zirconiumbased nuclear components including material selection qualification fabrication inspection and in-service performance.
  • Support evaluations of zirconium alloy degradation mechanisms (e.g. corrosion hydrogen pickup hydride formation creep cracking) and contribute to lifecycle management and issueresolution activities.
  • Provide support to major refurbishment projects and new nuclear builds in Canada and abroad as they relate to materials considerations.
  • Provide support to utility operations by resolving plant operational problems related to materials performance.
  • Complete assigned scope of work and/or tasks within established budget schedule and quality requirements.
  • Assess and evaluate the use of metallic and nonmetallic materials in nuclear systems components tooling and construction including metallurgical assessments weldingrelated evaluations and failure analysis.
  • Lead or support materials metallurgical and weldingrelated degradation and qualification testing programs in a laboratory environment and/or coordinate with external testing laboratories.

About you

  • Engineering degree or graduate degree in Materials Engineering Metallurgical Engineering Welding Engineering or a related discipline with relevant coursework and/or work experience in materials applications.

  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario would be preferred

  • Minimum 8 years of related work experience in materials engineering NDE and welding with specialization in nuclear power plant environments.
  • Prior experience working in a metallurgical laboratory or materials testing environment is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of CSA N285.6 ASME BPV Code Sections II/III/V/IX and other applicable codes standards or regulatory guides related to permanent plant components pressure boundary equipment and/or reactor systems is preferred.
  • Working knowledge or experience with carbon steels stainless steels nickel alloys and zirconium alloys including metallurgy corrosion behavior and performance in nuclear or other safetycritical applications.
  • Familiarity with fabrication metallurgical heat treatment welding processes and qualifications inspection techniques and interpretation of material test data is an asset.
  • Familiarity with fabrication heat treatment welding inspection and interpretation of material test data for zirconium alloy components is an asset.
  • Familiar with metallurgical laboratory techniques for examination of microstructure and properties of metals (carbon steel stainless steel) and welds of the materials.
  • Ability to apply technical principles in a logical and practical manner to resolve engineering issues or technical problems.
  • Basic knowledge of CANDU mechanical and process systems structures and components is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency with standard computer tools (e.g. Word Excel) and willingness to qualify as a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW).
  • Excellent organizational and timemanagement skills including the ability to consider and integrate the plans of others.
  • Self-initiative to perform research and gather information.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
