Household Supervisor Permanent and Full-Time


The Dublin Dental University Hospital is the major dental teaching hospital in Ireland undertaking the training of postgraduate and undergraduate dental students student dental nurses dental technicians and dental hygienists. We are currently seeking to recruit a Household Supervisor Permanent Full-Time based on 39 hours per week within the Nursing Department.

The position reports to and is accountable to the Director of Nursing or by any other authorised designated officer that the responsibility is delegated to by the Director of Nursing. The Household Supervisor will embrace continuous quality improvement and development within the household department and will contribute to the management of the changes necessary to achieve Dublin Dental University Hospital objectives.


Outline of Duties and Responsibilities

The role of the Household Supervisor includes but is not limited to:


  • Responsible for day-to-day supervision of household staff to include janitors and rapid response cleaning team and monitor standards throughout their shift. Liaise with contract cleaning supervisor on a daily basis to address any issues.

  • Conduct monthly cleaning audits with contract cleaning supervisor report results of audits to DON.

  • Ensure all necessary risk assessments are conduct and reviewed to maintain a safe and secure working environment.

  • Organise weekly walk-around with contract cleaning supervisor and address any identified issues.

  • To ensure a high-quality cleaning service in the hospital with a particular emphasis on general hospital area (i.e. waiting areas toilets) meeting rooms boardroom kitchen and common room areas.

  • To ensure a high level of safety is maintained in all general areas of the hospital including kitchens meeting rooms boardroom and common room areas.

  • Liaise with Administration on a daily basis and check facilities diary to obtain weekly meeting schedule.

  • To ensure all meetings/lunches and functions are set up appropriately and on time.

  • To ensure all food is handled in a hygienic manner.

  • Order refreshments (e.g. sandwiches) and appropriate food for meetings and functions.

  • Ensure all supplies of refreshments (e.g. sandwiches) are delivered on time.

  • Record all deliveries (e.g. sandwiches tea coffee etc.)

  • Arrange delivery of refreshment for short notice meetings.

  • Ensure all rooms are clean and tidy and set up for relevant meetings.

  • Clean up following all meetings/functions or arrange for contract staff to do so if meetings run late in the evening.

  • To ensure the availability of laundry as required distribute laundry to all staff and students at allocated times.

  • Check in and out all laundry and dry cleaning.

  • Liaise with laundry supplier regarding ordering of clinical attire (e.g. gowns). Organise for repair and labelling of clinical attire when required.

  • Receive deliveries checking and monitoring and distribution of same. Taking appropriate action to rectify any shortfalls.

  • Keeping records of deliveries checking and processing invoices.

  • Liaise with contractors as appropriate e.g. laundry services Pest control cleaning contractors.

  • Arrange for waste and laundry to be collected from clinical areas at designated times.

  • Ensure monthly checks are carried out on all First Aid boxes throughout non clinical areas of the hospital restock as necessary.

  • Ensure cleaning schedules are adhered to and review working practices where service and trends demand.

  • Implement cleaning procedures schedules and completion of record logs to provide quality assurance for all areas in line with national standards of cleanliness and legionella compliance.

  • Monitor staff sickness completing return to work interviews liaising with DON when necessary.

  • Complete annual appraisals with each member of staff within their remit complete necessary paperwork and forward to DON.

  • Organise mandatory training sessions (e.g. hand hygiene manual handling) for staff ensuring compliance at all times.

  • Demonstrate duties and be responsible for the training of new and existing members of staff.

  • Deal efficiently and effectively with all departmental/domestic problems and complaints.

  • To maintain stock levels ensuring adequate supplies e.g. hand towels toilet paper in all toilets and locker room/shower areas throughout the day as necessary and ensure economical use of all materials keeping wastage to a minimum.

  • Ensure regular checks are completed on all toilet areas throughout the day as per cleaning schedule.

  • Undertake periodic health and safety departmental inspections and assist with risk assessments to monitor health and safety standards.

  • Assist with efficient running of the common room.

  • To ensure all equipment is in good working order is checked maintained and recorded on a regular basis. To observe any defects in the fabric of the building furniture or cleaning equipment within the designated area of work reporting same to maintenance department for appropriate repair or attention.

  • Ensure cleaning schedule of refrigerators is maintained including recording temperature and checking expiry dates of contents is adhered to.

  • Ensure correct use of colour coded cloths buckets mops and bags are adhered to.

  • Ensure members of household staff are familiar with correct protocol for handling clinical waste using colour coded bags and dispose of appropriately.

  • Ensure staff wear suitable protective clothing and adhere to the departments personal hygiene guidelines. Support the DDUH commitment to preventing and controlling healthcare associated infection (HAI).

  • To monitor food service standards ensuring compliance with Food Safety Management systems and food legislation regulations.

  • Attend training sessions as required by head of department to maintain the necessary knowledge and skills including mandatory training.

  • Assist the head of department to implement any new or updated procedures policies and paperwork.

  • Forward all paperwork (e.g. delivery dockets invoices checklists cleaning check record of fridge temperature.)

  • Ensure sufficient level of petty cash for purchasing of items for meetings (e.g. food catering equipment of small value sanitation items of small value).

  • Organise purchases from wholesalers as identified.

  • Maintain accurate time keeping records and seek approval with DON for annual leave and overtime.

The extent and speed of change in the delivery of services is such that adaptability is essential to this level of appointment. The person chosen will be required to maintain enhance and develop their professional knowledge skills and aptitudes necessary to respond to a changing situation. Qualifications Experience and Person Specification

Each candidate must have:

  • Have a minimum of 3 years supervisory management experience or a Management Qualification.

  • Have a comprehensive knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Outlook Word and Excel.

  • Have an ECDL Qualification and experience using Dropbox.

  • Demonstrate a good understanding of hygiene health and safety HACCP and COSHH Regulations.

  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and proven written and verbal communication abilities.

Candidates should ideally:

  • Be able to identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.

  • Be personally motivated with the ability to empower and motivate others.

  • Demonstrable adaptability to rapid changes taking place in the Hospital and external institutions to include educational and health services in general.

  • Have the ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.

  • Have the ability to work on own initiative prioritise and manage a number of issues simultaneously and demonstrate attention to detail.

  • Ability to demonstrate efficient work management processes.
