Orientation Welcome Leaders (OWLs) are vital in welcoming and supporting new students as they transition to college. OWLs serve as ambassadors for the institution providing guidance resources and a positive first impression to incoming students and their families. They are responsible for facilitating orientation sessions leading group activities answering questions and helping new students feel connected and confident as they begin their academic journey.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead Orientation Sessions:

o Guide small groups of new students through orientation activities and events.

o Present information about campus resources policies and student life.

o Create videos/webinars for online sessions.

o Facilitate campus tours and help students navigate the campus environment.

  • Provide Peer Support and Mentorship:

o Serve as a knowledgeable and approachable resource for new students.

o Answer questions about academic programs campus life and student services.

o Encourage student involvement and participation in campus activities.

  • Foster a Welcoming Environment:

o Promote a sense of belonging and inclusion among new students.

o Encourage positive interactions and teamwork within orientation groups.

o Address concerns and challenges with professionalism and empathy.

  • Assist with Event Coordination and Logistics:

o Help set up and break down orientation events.

o Manage attendance and participation records.

o Ensure that orientation materials and resources are distributed effectively.

  • Promote Institutional Values:

o Model positive behavior and uphold the universitys code of conduct.

o Encourage respect diversity and inclusion among new students.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled SFBU undergraduate or graduate student in good academic and disciplinary standing.

  • Strong communication leadership and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.

  • Enthusiastic approachable and patient demeanor.

  • Knowledge of campus resources and student services (preferred).

Required Commitments:

  • Attend mandatory training sessions before the orientation period.

  • Be available for all scheduled orientation events and follow-up activities.

  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times.

Work Schedule: Varies Monday - Friday between 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM. Approximately 20-29 hours per week.

May 1: Hiring Paperwork/On-boarding

May 4 - 29: Training On-Line Orientation Video Preparations

Aug 1 - 7: Prep

August 10 - 13: Undergraduate NSO

August 14: Graduate Student NSO

August 17 September 4: Weeks of Welcome Events

Pay Rate: $20/hour
