General Definition of Work

The Elementary School Counselor provides a comprehensive school counseling program that supports the academic social-emotional and career development of all students. The counselor collaborates with teachers administrators parents and community stakeholders to promote student success and well-being in a safe and supportive learning environment.

Essential Functions

  • Develop implement and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with district and state standards.
  • Deliver classroom guidance lessons that address social-emotional learning character education and academic skills.
  • Provide individual and small group counseling to support students academic progress behavior and personal development.
  • Assist students in developing skills such as decision-making problem-solving conflict resolution and goal setting.
  • Collaborate with teachers administrators and staff to identify and support students with academic or behavioral concerns.
  • Consult with parents/guardians regarding student needs and provide resources or referrals when appropriate.
  • Coordinate and participate in MTSS Individualized Education Program (IEP) and 504 meetings as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with applicable laws and policies.
  • Respond to crisis situations and provide appropriate intervention and follow-up services.
  • Promote a positive school climate that supports diversity equity and inclusion.
  • Provide guidance on transition activities (e.g. moving between grade levels or schools).
  • Utilize data to assess program effectiveness and inform decision-making.
  • Stay current with best practices and participate in professional development opportunities.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain attention to detail in a dynamic educational setting.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules.
  • Ability to speak effectively with elementary age students and/or employees in a school environment.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students staff and the community.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.


Education and Experience

  • South Carolina Certification in Elementary School Counselor.
  • Experience with managing large groups of children at the elementary school level preferred.
  • Experience working on a variety of technologies needed to support the schools technological functions.

Special Requirements

  • Must have and maintain a valid Drivers License or ability to provide own transportation.
  • May be required to travel to school district buildings and professional meetings.
  • Prior to beginning employment negative tb test results will be required.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Generally required to have the physical ability to perform tasks such as standing or walking for extended periods bending reaching and lifting or carrying moderately heavy materials like boxes of books or equipment often weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Good vision and hearing are important for reading small print using computers and communicating effectively with students and staff. Manual dexterity is needed for handling books shelving materials and operating audiovisual and computer equipment.
  • The working conditions are typically indoors in a climate-controlled school library environment and with an occasional requirement to work outdoors for special days or events.
  • The librarian works during regular school hours although some additional time may be required for special events meetings or library organization.
  • The setting may be moderately noisy due to student activities and there may be interruptions throughout the day as the librarian assists students teachers and other staff.
  • The role involves interacting with children of various age groups and managing multiple tasks simultaneously in a dynamic educational environment.
