Job Summary

Description

The Social Work Intern will assist the Library in developing resources to assist our unhoused patrons to identify unmet needs and help individuals to access services.

Required Performance Standards

  • Communications: Writes and speaks clearly logically and concisely. Listens effectively. Demonstrates small and large group communication skills. Keeps colleagues team members and supervisors well informed. Participates in group discussions.
  • Customer Service: Presents welcoming behaviors. Remains helpful and professional with members. Responds quickly and cooperatively to requests from staff or public. Follows Dauphin County Library Systems (The Library) guidelines and training for customer service approach. Demonstrates ability to determine customers needs. Follows up on customer transactions.
  • Analytical Skills/Problem Solving/Decision Making: Uses sound judgment in making decisions. Constructively manages conflict. Works with others to solve problems and achieve results.
  • Technological Skills: Demonstrates ability to use computers. Demonstrates ability to access and use the Internet and electronic databases. Demonstrates ability to use and maintain equipment basic to job.
  • Workplace Maintenance/Management: Maintains and manages workplace security and safety. Pays attention to personal workspace housekeeping.
  • Flexibility and Adaptability: Remains calm in difficult ambiguous and challenging situations. Responds appropriately to changes in direction and priorities. Adapts personal style to work situations. Takes corrective action when required.
  • Interpersonal and Group Relationships: Willing to work with and for others. Supports and facilitates cooperation among others.
  • Professional Standards and Ethics: Protects and values member confidentiality and organizational security. Supports mission and vision of The Library. Upholds American Library Associations Library Code of Ethics as interpreted by The Library. Works toward furthering a library-conscious community.

Environmental Conditions

Primarily indoors seated at a desk using a computer.

Essential Functions

Developing relationships with service providers to foster better and quicker connections to the unhoused individuals who use the library.

This may include arranging for health care providers and other service providers to come to the library on a regular or one-time basis.

  • Working with individuals to apply for SNAP Medicaid Veterans Benefits and other public benefits.
  • Creating flyers that provide up-to-date information about resources for emergency housing permanent housing health care and food.
  • Helping individuals to identify and apply for potential housing and employment.
  • Assisting victims of domestic violence to access services.
  • Connecting patrons to legal services.
  • Participating in planning activities of the Capital Area Coalition on Homelessness.
  • Lives by the Core Values.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Training: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Development (GED). Bachelors degree or coursework in social work is preferred.

Experience: Excellent communication skills. Working knowledge of social work practice and theories. Able to collaborate with others in a team environment. Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities. Demonstrated ability to work independently. Compassionate and non-judgmental attitude. Computer literacy and experience with MS Office Suite. Some knowledge of relevant laws regulations and policies.

Required: Requires independent transportation for travel to libraries and outreach locations. Ability to lift 35 lbs. unassisted.
