TITLE: Kindergarten Transition Leader 2026-2027 School Year

LOCATIONS:Elementary Schools (Thomas Paine Dr. Williams Leal Dr. King and Yankee Ridge Multilingual)

Reports to: Family Engagement and KindergartenCoordinator and Building Administrator

Job SUMMARY: The primary role of the Kindergarten Transition Teacher is to create a smooth transition for kindergarten students from the Urbana Early Childhood School/UECS Head Start home daycares etc. into Urbana School District #116s elementary schools.

Essential Functions:

  • Keep track of the registration template for students that are registered make sure the screening appointment is scheduled.
  • Organize and review Kindergarten files (i.e. observations from pre-schools Kindergarten transition meeting notes transition form printed from skyward for UECS students) Kindergarten parent interview behavior plans IEPs etc.) for the upcoming school year.
  • Assist school secretaries as needed with obtaining required paperwork for Kindergarten students to begin the school year.
  • Collaborate with the building principal to create Kindergarten class lists based on the data from Kindergarten screening and transition meeting notes (if applicable) and the students previous school daycare etc. to create as much balance as possible in each classroom.
  • Provide resources (i.e. ways to support learning at home academic resources school information etc.) to Kindergarten families at the beginning of the school year events (Back to School Night Curriculum Night etc.)
  • Provide updated Kindergarten information for Back to School Night Kindergarten Open House etc. to the building principal for the school newsletter and to the director of communications and marketing to update your schools website.
  • Meet with Kindergarten teachers in the fall to review the incoming Kindergarten students files (screening information etc.) to prepare academic and social emotional transitional supports etc. for the students to foster a school year that will support students in achieving their own levels of personal greatness.
  • Screen students that were not screened during registration enter the screening data into the Kindergarten Screening Data spreadsheet and share the information with the students classroom teachers school psychologist and building principal.
  • In the spring send a welcome letter to incoming families introducing yourself as the Kindergarten Transition Teacher provide information about Kindergarten Registration required health information forms Centralized Registration and other important dates related to the school year. Make this letter available in your schools main office during Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences and at UECS. Provide the office secretaries with the orange backpacks that were given out at Kindergarten Registration to give to any student that did not attend Kindergarten Registration.
  • Attend UECS transition meetings in the Spring (as needed) complete the transition note sheet and observe the incoming students in their classrooms at UECS to identify the level of individual support students will need to be academically behaviorally and socially successful in Kindergarten.
  • Collaborate with Champaign County Head Start and Kindergarten Coordinator in the Spring to meet with the teachers review the Kindergarten transition forms with the teachers observe the incoming students in their classrooms etc. to identify the level of individual support students will need to be academically behaviorally and socially successful in Kindergarten.
  • Host a Kindergarten Open House in the Spring in collaboration with building administration. Provide students and families with books and materials to help prepare them for Kindergarten. Provide Kindergarten classroom teachers with timesheets; if they attend they will be paid for two hours.
  • Meet quarterly as a Kindergarten Transition Team to discuss current Kindergarten students support and services social-emotional and academic progress of Kindergarten students and transition notes from incoming Kindergarten students.

Qualifications:

  • Illinois Teaching Certification
  • A current employee with Urbana School District #116
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication/collaboration skills.
  • Strong knowledge of curriculum instruction assessment and family engagement
  • Work experience collecting analyzing and interpreting student performance data in a school setting

Preferred:

  • Experience teaching lower level elementary (K-1st) or early childhood students
  • Experience coordinating events/activities
  • Classroom teacher Tier 1 Teacher or Special Education teacher

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Requires at least a one-year commitment for the 2026-2027 school year
  • $1000 stipend per year total prorated quarterly upon the successful completion of all duties and responsibilities associated with this position (may be split between two certified staff)

  • This is a stipend position within the collective bargaining unit and is not an administrative role. The stipend position does not interfere with other stipend responsibilities.
