Belmont Hospital is a facility within Hunter New England Local Health District providing highquality patientcentred care to the Lake Macquarie community. The Palliative Care Service delivers specialist care to patients with lifelimiting illness across the inpatient setting and liaises closely with community services.
The multidisciplinary team works closely with patients families and carers to promote comfort dignity and quality of life and collaborates with acute services general practitioners and community providers across the district. Belmont Hospital offers a supportive collaborative work environment in a peaceful location close to Lake Macquarie and Newcastle.
About Our Role
The Nurse Practitioner Palliative Care provides advanced autonomous clinical care to patients with lifelimiting illness across inpatient and community settings. The role focuses on comprehensive assessment clinical management symptom control care coordination and advance care planning in partnership with patients families and the multidisciplinary team.
Key responsibilities include conducting advanced clinical assessments prescribing and managing medications ordering and interpreting diagnostics and developing and evaluating palliative care plans. The Nurse Practitioner provides expert clinical advice leads case conferences supports complex decisionmaking and contributes to quality improvement service development and evidencebased practice.
The role provides clinical leadership education and support to nursing and multidisciplinary staff but does not usually have direct line management responsibilities. The position works collaboratively with medical officers allied health general practitioners and community services to ensure seamless patientcentred care. The Nurse Practitioner reports operationally to the to the Director of Nursing.
The Nurse Practitioner Palliative Care will be supported by a collaborative multidisciplinary team senior clinicians and nursing leadership within Hunter New England Local Health District. A structured orientation and onboarding plan is provided on commencement tailored to the role and local service model.
Ongoing support includes access to clinical supervision peer Nurse Practitioner networks mentoring and professional development opportunities. The service supports continuing education reflective practice and involvement in quality improvement and service development activities.
Essential:
- Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
- Endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner
- Relevant Masterslevel qualification enabling NP endorsement
- Advanced clinical experience in palliative or related specialty
- Prescribing authority with MBS/PBS eligibility
- Current Class C NSW Driver Licence
Able to be Developed:
- Further scope expansion and credentialing
- Leadership education quality improvement or research skills

- Endorsed Nurse Practitioner with advanced clinical assessment diagnostic and prescribing skills
- Demonstrated experience in palliative and endoflife care including symptom management and advance care planning
- Highlevel communication skills particularly in complex sensitive and emotionally challenging situations
- Strong clinical judgement accountability and ability to make independent decisions
- Commitment to compassionate culturally safe and familycentred care
- Ability to collaborate effectively across inpatient community and primary care settings
