Job Summary/Basic Function

The School of Music at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for an 11-month full-time temporary (non-tenurable) faculty position (#131280) as the assistant director of bands at the rank of lecturer. This is a one-year temporary appointment. The contract may be renewed annually based on available funding demonstrated need and satisfactory performance as assessed by annual evaluations. The appointment start date is August 1 2026.

The successful candidate will serve as a key member of the athletic band leadership team carrying out assigned responsibilities under the supervision of the Director of Bands and the Associate Director of Bands in support of the standards and mission of the MTSU band program. Primary responsibilities include serving as the assistant to the Director of the Band of Blue marching band as director and conductor of the basketball and volleyball pep bands and as the conductor and artistic director of the MTSU Concert Band each spring. The School of Music may assign additional responsibilities based on the candidates strengths.

The MTSU School of Music serves approximately 250 undergraduate and graduate music majors pursuing Bachelor of Music Bachelor of Arts and Master of Music degrees as well as many students pursuing specialized minors. For more information visit Education

A masters degree in music is required by the appointment date.

Special consideration will be given to candidates with a doctoral degree and to those who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to contemporary pedagogical practices across higher education and K12 contexts.

Applicants must provide documented evidence of substantial instruction in marching and pep bands at the high school or collegiate level and technical and artistic competence as a conductor. This can be achieved by including a list of courses taught along with their descriptions in the CV.

Applicants must provide documented evidence ofadministrative and organizational experience including specific examples in the cover letter.

Applicants must also provide a link(s) to MARCHING AND/OR PEP band rehearsal(s) and performance(s) (minimum 15 minutes) videos AND a link(s) to concert band rehearsal(s) and performance(s) (minimum 15 minutes) videos. This may be accomplished by providing links either in their curriculum vitae or in a document attached as Other Document 1. The links must be active and working at the time of application submission and remain so until the search is complete.
