:59 PMCBC Toronto is looking for a key member of the newsroom - a Provincial Affairs Reporter assigned to cover Queens Park.
The successful candidate must have a deep understanding of provincial politics and a track record of uncovering news that matters to citizens. Beyond traditional reporting this reporter will be expected to provide analysis for the audience on a regular basis bringing added depth to key provincial stories. You are a critical thinker and advocate for our audiences by holding elected officials to account.
The current global political climate has made the accurate in-depth and objective coverage of a government and its decisions more important than ever before. You have a record of breaking stories of political significance and a deep roster of contacts. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic standards and practices but initiative and independent judgment are also required.
You have the ability to connect the workings of Queens Park to the key issues and needs of Ontarios diverse communities. You are a great communicator and have the confidence and experience to put legislative news into context for the audience on all platforms. You have a strong digital presence and are as comfortable in breaking news situations as you are at providing analysis. You thrive when you are in the spotlight and can appear regularly on CBCs live platforms and programs to analyze provincial affairs.
Reporting to the Executive Producer for news the successful candidate will be a key member of CBC Torontos newsroom with a keen news sense superior editorial judgement and excellent initiative.
This role requires full time on site presence.
Key Tasks:
Researches gathers and presents information on political or governmental issues and events for digital and broadcast platforms.
Contributes original ideas daily.
Delivers regular analysis on top stories.
Provides expertise on provincial issues to programs as needed.
Makes recommendations to assist in planning station coverage of significant political events.
Writes quick accurate stories in a breaking news situation.
Prepares scripts and presents live and on demand broadcast content.
Connects developments at Queens Park to audience needs in communities across the province.
Remains up to date on changes at Queens Park.
Maintains a network of provincial contacts as well as an array of recognized experts and authorities able to comment on political issues and events.
What you bring:
A passion for and deep knowledge of provincial politics.
Demonstrated analysis writing skills.
Demonstrated solid news judgment.
Deep knowledge of and connection to the equity-seeking communities across Ontario.
Established contacts at Queens Park and a history of developing meaningful stories through them.
Demonstrated experience using investigative tools to uncover news.
Proven ability to work in a high-stress tight-deadline environment.
Ability to balance multiple priorities and to respond to competing demands in a short span of time.
Exceptional proven organizational skills.
Ability to participate in a highly creative and collaborative team.
Demonstrated ability to plan projects and recommend news treatments for multiple platforms.
Experience delivering live debriefs for broadcast platforms.
Additional requirements:
A university degree in journalism or equivalent.
A minimum of five years experience covering politics.
Ability to work flexible hours including evenings overtime and weekends as required.
