REGISTERED PRACTICAL NURSE (RPN) (CONTRACT) (19-26)

BEHAVIORAL SUPPORTS ONTARIO (BSO)



Hours of Work: 28 hours per week

Job Status: Contract to January 2028

Purpose of the Position: To deliver quality community-based consultation & treatment services as an integrated member of the Behavioural Supports Ontario Outreach Team. The aim is to improve the quality of life for older adults with or at risk of responsive behaviours/personal expressions arising from mental health substance use dementia delirium and/or other neurological conditions as well as enhancing the lives of their care partners. The role will be supported by direct clinical supervision from the Clinical Lead and Program Manager with accountabilities to and in partnership with the Northeast Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO) Central Office.

Education and Qualifications:

  • Current certificate of registration in good standing as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Medication Administration Certification from a recognized College if this training was not received from the Practical Nursing education.
  • One year of experience working with individuals with age-related: mental illnesses chronic physical health and substance use issues.
  • Knowledge of current community mental health issues nursing theory and practice psychiatric nursing experience (including psycho-geriatrics).
  • Familiarity with and commitment to implementing Standards of Practice.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence and applied inter-collaborative skills to promote facilitate and integrate best practice principles in geriatric mental health and behavioural health across sectors; certifications in fundamental BSO core competencies such as P.I.E.C.E.S. GPA and Dementiability considered a strong asset
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with BSO community agencies hospitals and other relevant organizations as required.
  • Aware of and follows BSO administrative and reporting processes.
  • Proven ability to collaborate and support consultations with geriatric psychiatrists care of the elderly physicians and a wide range of internal and external stakeholders across rural settings required.
  • Proven cultural awareness & safety in working with older adults and care partners from diverse backgrounds required.
  • Knowledge of consent and capacity issues and legislation involving this population (e.g. Public Guardian Trustee Substitute Decision Maker Act Health Care Consent ACT; Mental Health Act; Long-term Care ACT; PHIPA) required.



Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct and indirect care/support for clients and their families/caregivers in the community by performing such tasks as:
  • Completing nursing assessments utilizing specific and specialized assessment tools.
  • Developing a goal-directed care plan.
  • Using a range of interventions including individual group and family counseling health teaching and supportive counseling in areas such as substance abuse grief palliative care issues anxiety disorders severe mental illness personality disorders organic brain disease and age-related mental illness geriatric issues.
  • Maintaining documentation throughout the consumer admission to program of all clinical contacts as directed by the Standards of Nursing Practice and program/agency policies.
  • Participating in research and educational activities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A knowledge base of psychotropic and cognitive enhancer medications.
  • A strong commitment to supporting the rights and abilities of all persons including support to live and participate in a community in ways that are meaningful to them.
  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally autonomously collaboratively and respectfully within a team environment and with a range of internal and external stakeholders in a rural setting.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as cooperatively within a team environment in a rural setting.
  • Excellent communication organization and interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows the Internet and data management software.
  • A willingness to serve clients within the communities of the District of Muskoka and Parry Sound.
  • A valid Ontario G or G2 drivers license a safe and reliable means of transportation and appropriate insurance for work purposes on your vehicle with a minimum of $in liability coverage.
  • Bilingual in French/English language considered an asset.
  • Work schedule may include days/evenings/weekends and statutory holidays.

Salary scale: $29.85 to $39.09 per hour commensurate with qualifications and experience.
