Role Summary

As the Trauma Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator at Howard University Hospital you will design lead and continually evolve our Trauma Injury Prevention Program a cornerstone offering of the only DC Level 1 Trauma Center on the campus of a Historically Black University. Reporting to the Director of Trauma Services you will translate trauma data and community insight into impactful prevention programming public education and outreach that reaches youth families and partners across the District and the broader Washington DC region.

You will be the public face of HUHs injury prevention work designing curricula leading workshops and health fairs building partnerships with community organizations securing grant funding and ensuring our program meets the requirements of our Level 1 Trauma Center designation. What Youll Do

Program Design & Operations

  • Develop maintain and continuously improve the Injury Prevention Center and its supporting database; design and lead injury prevention projects responsive to the needs of internal and external customers
  • Use trauma data including E-codes ICD-10 coding ISS and GCS to identify high-impact prevention priorities and shape programming
  • Conduct research relating to trauma prevention and incorporate evidence-based findings into Center programming
  • Ensure the program meets the injury prevention requirements of the American College of Surgeons Level 1 Trauma Center designation

Education & Community Outreach

  • Deliver injury prevention programs in a variety of formats lectures workshops health fairs literature and youth-focused programming
  • Build and sustain collaborative relationships with community organizations schools public agencies and other stakeholders invested in injury prevention
  • Represent the Center and Howard University Hospital at health fairs and at regional and national injury prevention conferences
  • Learn and apply interventions related to substance use prevention (e.g. SBIRT) where indicated by program scope

Evaluation & Quality Improvement

  • Evaluate outcomes of all outreach activities and use findings to refine programming and demonstrate impact to leadership and external partners
  • Contribute to the Trauma Service Quality Improvement Program supporting performance review data analysis and process improvement

Funding & Sustainability

  • Identify pursue and write grant funding applications to sustain and expand injury prevention outreach activities

Compliance & Regulatory

  • Promote adherence to the Health Sciences Compliance Program the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct
  • Attend all mandatory compliance training including HIPAA Privacy training; actively participate in compliance program activities
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of patients families and staff

Required Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Social Work Public Health Nursing or a related science required
  • Five (5) years of comprehensive experience and demonstrated knowledge in the field of injury prevention
  • Working knowledge of E-codes ICD-10 codes ISS and GCS scoring
  • Demonstrated ability to design implement and evaluate trauma awareness and injury prevention programs
  • Demonstrated grant writing experience and the ability to prepare competitive funding applications
  • Excellent training presentation marketing interpersonal verbal and written communication skills
  • High-level problem-solving skills and the ability to work flexibly creatively and independently
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications and Windows-based programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Public Health (MPH)
  • Experience working within or in support of an ACS-verified Level 1 Trauma Center
  • Experience designing and delivering youth-focused injury prevention programming
  • Familiarity with substance use screening and brief intervention models (e.g. SBIRT)

Pay & Schedule

This is a full-time exempt position. Salary range: $55000 $71000 annually commensurate with experience and qualifications.
