PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: 27600 - 33900 depending on relevant skills knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
Welsh language skills are not necessary for this role.
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
As a journalist on the BBC Wales Newsdesk youll play an important role in helping cover a wide range of stories across Wales. The role will mainly comprise of writing and reading hourly news bulletins for BBC Radio Wales but the job will also include newsgathering shifts and the opportunity to plan pitch and report on your own stories which could be broadcast across Online TV and Radio outlets.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM:
The Newsdesk team are a widely skilled close knit team responsible for dealing with a wide range of stories every day that end up being broadcast on TV Radio and Online services. As a newsreader for Radio Wales you will be part of a team responsible for delivering that news to a high quality to the audience on a daily basis. Youll also hopefully bring story ideas to the team that could lead to coverage across different outlets. This 12 month attachment will cover the initial period of the new Welsh Government so it will be a busy and exciting time to be working on the Newsdesk and on air.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
Youll be able to write and read radio news bulletins that are broadcast hourly to a high quality during the week and on weekends.
Youll show editorial judgement in knowing what makes a good story and how they should be treated/covered.
You will be able to help the Newsdesk respond to breaking news stories and collate information on developing stories.
You will be able to work together in a team to divide workload on some stories but also be able to work alone when needed.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Were looking for someone who has the ability to write and read radio news bulletins to a high standard.
Has an understanding of our radio programmes TV output and online presence and an ability or desire to work across all three
A technical understanding of broadcast output/systems and a willingness to learn new skills.
A willingness to work as an active member of a team across all platforms.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- Radio news bulletin writing and broadcasting skills. Specific training on the use of radio production systems can be given.
- Editorial experience the ability to spot a story which may need responses or legal advice.
- Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines and respond to breaking news at any time of the day.
- Ability to generate story ideas which could benefit the wider newsroom.
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED
- Welsh language skills not required but always helpful in the BBC Wales Newsroom.
- Any story ideas you may have.
