Job Summary
POSITION PURPOSE:
The City of Birmingham (EOE) is seeking qualified candidates for the part-time position of Streets/Sewer/Water (SSW) Laborer in the Department of Public Services. Under the supervision of the Streets/Sewer/Water Foreman this entry-level position performs maintenance and operation of public infrastructure.
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This list is not to be treated as all inclusive.
- Work includes outdoor physical labor.
- Operation of various types of equipment including dump trucks snow plows and light construction equipment.
- Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties related to work projects;
- Patching roads
- Painting fire hydrants
- Placing barricades
- Maintaining vehicles
- Plowing/salting
- Assists other crew personnel as required.
- Additional related responsibilities as assigned.
NECESSARY SKILLS:
- Must be able to operate equipment
- Must have knowledge of safety procedures
- Must exercise good judgment
- Time management
- Must be self-motivated
- Ability to work well with others
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent
- Minimum age of 18 years old with a valid drivers license
- Prefer 2-3 years of experience in the operation of light and medium-duty construction equipment
- Prefer possession of a State of Michigan commercial drivers license group A or B with tanker endorsement
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to lift at least 50lbs
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time
- Must be able to work outside in extreme conditions (heat cold snow rain etc.)
- Must be able to operate heavy machinery

- Office space including desk computer and phone
- City provided keys
- City provided tools
