The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Childrens Ambulatory Medical Care the Clinical Leader of Operations supports the efficient and effective operation of the Pediatric Endocrine and Diabetes Care Teams by assisting with the planning organization and directing of clinical care. The Clinical Leader is a Registered Nurse who provides leadership to the interprofessional team in a designated clinical area and models sound professional practice. The Clinical Leader Operations fosters the development of an environment in which the desired outcome of all activities is the enhancement of patient care while demonstrating strong leadership organization and communication skills. The Clinical Leader Operations will also provide nursing care to children youth and families primarily in the ambulatory clinic setting and is responsible for the application of the nursing process in the delivery of family-centred patient care consistent with the philosophy mission and vision of IWK Health.

Major Responsibilities

Collaboration with interdisciplinary care team members involved in patient care.
Providing comprehensive nursing assessment care planning and management of patients/families cared for by the Diabetes Team.
Patient/family teaching patient testing and facilitated telephone care form a significant part of the diabetes nurse educators role.
Accurately assesses patient/family needs during clinic visits and telephone consultations and supports the development of both individualized and population-specific plans of care. These plans are continuously evaluated and revised as necessary.
Coordinates care for the designated populations; acts as a clinical resource for staff regarding patient care issues.
Monitors and evaluates patient care standards and makes recommendations/takes action for changes as appropriate.
In consultation with the manager oversees day-to-day staffing levels and ensures daily staff complements meet patient care needs in the area. This includes but is not limited to overseeing vacation time away requests and sick calls.
Oversees the use of the Endocrine/Diabetes ambulatory space to ensure maximal space utilization to meet the ever-changing demands of the patient populations seen in the area.
Takes on a leadership role within the Program through involvement in various committees and meetings (ie Care Team Operations Accreditation and Team Operation Committees).
Develops a strong understanding of the clinical needs of both the Diabetes and Endocrine Care teams and collaborates with the Manager in service planning (including staff scheduling staff complements and skill mix) to predict future needs and new directives.
Oversees and participates in the development and submission of quarterly reports. The Clinical Leader may delegate shared responsibility for these reports.
Demonstrates team-building skills with the ability to foster and create an environment where team members feel empowered and valued.
Demonstrates a strong understanding of Continuous Quality Improvement and a High Reliability Organization and fosters an environment where these concepts are ingrained in the culture.
Provides leadership in care team discussions and provides input and energy into efforts at improving clinic efficiency and functioning.
Provides leadership in identifying processes that will ensure the MDATU Clinical areas are providing the best care to our patients and families.
Demonstrates knowledge of Family Centred Care and Cultural Competency
In collaboration with the Manager identifies issues that have potential or actual impact on clinical care; demonstrates effective decision making; and utilizes sound problem-solving skills.
Participates in interdisciplinary recruitment and selection as necessary and monitors clinic expenditures to work with the manager to plan/develop future budget needs.

Your Qualifications

Bachelors Degree in Nursing required.
Licensed or eligible for licensure by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN) is required.
Current successful completion of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (BLS) Program within the last 12 months or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate is required.
Minimum of five (5) years Pediatric Diabetes Nursing experience preferred.
Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) designation preferred. Willingness to obtain within the first 12 months of employment required.
Insulin Dose Adjustment (as a Delegated Medical Function) preferred. Willingness to obtain within the first 8 months of employment is required.
Certified Competencies in Insulin Pump Therapy preferred. Willingness to obtain the required.
Competency with computer applications (e.g. MS Word Outlook Internet) required.
Proven time management organizational and problem-solving skills required.
Demonstrated ability to partner/collaborate with families and multidisciplinary health care team members.
Previous Team Leader experience preferred.
Facilitator training an asset.
Preceptor training an asset.
Demonstrated commitment to professional development and practice required.
Demonstrated strong communication (both verbal & written) and interpersonal skills required.
Demonstrated sound judgment independent decision-making and leadership skills required.
Proven sound knowledge of Family Centred Care required.
Competency in other languages is considered an asset.
