Subject to formal establishment a vacancy may arise for a Wing Commander (Aircrew Pilot (Any) WSO (Any) or Air & Space Ops (Any)) to serve as SO1 Air Doctrine 1A at the Air & Space Warfare Centre (ASWC) RAF Waddington on Additional Duties Commitment (180) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS) with an initial proposed start date of being not before 2 November 2026 (or later subject to candidate status).
Based within the ASWC Headquarters this new role will augment the established ASWC Doctrine Team to help deliver single-Service national (joint) and NATO air domain doctrine. The post holder will also help coordinate RAF input into the Integrated Warfare Centres (IWC) and other single-Services doctrine development programmes. Specific responsibilities will include the following:
- Provide UK Air subject matter expertise (SME) support to the NATO Standardisation Organisation doctrine and STANAG development programme.
- Act as the UK Head of Delegation to the NATO Military Committee Air Standardisation Board (MCASB) and facilitate UK SME engagement within the working groups that fall under its auspices.
- Coordinate with Defence Standardisation the IWC and the UK Mil Rep (NATO HQ) in order to ensure all Air related STANAGs are staffed ratified and promulgated in a timely manner.
- In coordination with the rest of the ASWC Doctrine Team provide SME Air input in support of IWC joint doctrine development as well as Operational Advantage Centre (RN) and Land Warfare Centre doctrinal work-strands.
- Contribute to the production and maintenance of all single-Service operational-level doctrine publications notes and primers.
- Develop papers briefings and responses on air operations doctrinal topics.
- Provide support to broader UK air power development in conjunction with Air Staffs Director Defence Studies (RAF) and the IWC.
- Contribute to and if required lead doctrine-related ASWC Integrated Mission Support tasks.
