Description

The Shore Mechanic coordinates and performs maintenance and repairs on the non-engineered vessels as directed ensuring vessels are properly maintained in seaworthy condition. This role assists with the daily operations of the facility and provides instruction to trades persons and sub-contractors working onsite.

Note: Due to business needs this position is required to be fully on-site based at 10 Pemberton Avenue North Vancouver.

What youll do

  • Assists with daily operationsof responsible facility including organization scheduling (vessels people resources) and monitoring of the facility operations as well as the maintenance of the facility. Ensures proper organization and effective implementation of service schedules causing a minimum down time on the vessels.
  • Responds to troubleshooting requests. Provides initial diagnosis to the problem and determines the priority and suitable solution weighing in the effects on crew safety and possibility of further equipment damage.
  • Visits the vessel onsite or arranges an on-call repair person to inspect and repair the issue.
  • Performs repair inspections and determines repair solutions including scope method budget and timing of repair. Conducts assessment of seaworthiness of the vessels before allowing them to sail again.
  • For critical circumstances coordinates the vessels to a suitable tie up and organizes a third party to tow the vessel to the nearest facility.
  • Identifies and schedules vendors suppliers and contractors (both trades and equipment) for maintenance and repair. Supervises contractors in specialized trades and monitors the repair work.
  • Ensures work is performed in accordance with the companys safety policy and all applicable rules and regulations are adhered.Issues hot work permits and confined space permits.Participates in all Safety and environmental drills and inspections and is trained to be part of the facility Emergency Response Team.
  • Maintains an on-call rotation for running repairs on vessels outside of the regular work schedule.
  • Performs additional duties as required.

What youll bring

  • Grade 12 education.
  • Heavy Duty mechanic or Millwright Certificate with Interprovincial Red Seal Endorsement preferred. 4th Class Engineering Certificate or previous experience supervising vessel maintenance and repairs involving multiple vessels is an asset.
  • Class 5 drivers licence.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on mechanical maintenance and repair experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working as an onboard Engineer preferred.
  • Knowledge of marine emergency procedures and other applicable regulations.
  • Knowledge of vessel operations and requirement of the towing industry preferred.
  • Mechanical hydraulics and electrical trades skills. Knowledge of steel working and welding is an asset.
  • Ability to balance priorities and needs with available resources.
  • Organizational planning and problem-solving skills.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Creativity to resolve new technical and mechanical problems.
  • Advanced computer skills (MS Office).

The estimated salary for this position is $81000 - $99000. In determining final salary Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidates skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Companys sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
