Reporting to the Director of Special Education the Assistant Director of Special Education will be responsible for providing leadership and support to staff parents partner districts and students. The Assistant Director of Special Education will work be responsible for supporting the Director of Special Education. They will play an integral role in the management and direction of Sherwood Autism Centers Special Education department ensure compliance with stakeholder requirements local state and federal laws.

Hours: Monday-Friday 8am-4pm


Essential Functions:

  • Support the Director of Special Education in the implementation and oversight of special education programming to ensure alignment with organizational priorities standards and mission
  • Coach and train special education department staff on how to select adapt and design learning materials lesson plans teaching strategies and activities to teach skills based on interests and motivation to address each students individualized needs.
  • Supervise coach and support staff to ensure effective instructional practices professional conduct and adherence to organizational policies and expectations.
  • Assist with onboarding of new staff and support onboarding of new students and families to ensure successful integration into programming.
  • Coordinate and support communication between staff families school districts and internal teams with consistency and professionalism.
  • Conducts compliance efforts for special education K-12 ages 5-21; completes reviews of all special education IEP/BSP documents ensuring compliance with procedures state and federal laws.
  • Maintains a variety of computerized and manual records files and department databases (e.g. information packets rosters/listings calendars student records etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities providing reliable information and complying with organizational state and federal requirements.
  • Support daily program operations including staffing coordination classroom coverage and problem-solving to maintain continuity of services including providing direct classroom support as needed.
  • Foster and promote a cooperative working climate maximizing productivity and employee morale.
  • Assume other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education.

Requirements
  • Bachelors Degree in Special Education or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in special education settings
  • Experience working with students with autism and/or other developmental disabilities
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills across multiple stakeholder groups
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word Excel and Outlook
  • Strong organizational time management and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary teams (e.g. educators behavior analysts therapists and families)
  • Ability to pass Missouri Highway Patrol Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse/Neglect screening
  • Ability to pass the POET
  • Currently have their Class E license or be willing to attain it

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Masters Degree in Special Education or a related field
  • Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate in Special Education or a related area (as issued by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education) and/or the ability to transfer your current teaching certificate to Missouri.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within a special education setting (e.g. autism specialist instructional coach or department lead).
  • Experience supporting program operations including staffing coordination onboarding or systems implementation
