Providence Health Cares Mental Health Program is seeking passionate nurses with a strong background in psych nursing to join our hospital-wide Complex Intervention Response Team (CIRT) and Psychiatric Consult Liaison (CL) service as casuals.
As part of these unique referral-based teams you wont be assigned to just one unit youll support patients and staff across the hospital ensuring mental health and substance use concerns are addressed alongside medical needs. As a clinical leader and educator youll help build frontline capacity strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and promote best practices in psychiatric care in non-psychiatric settings ensuring that regardless of where a patient or clinician is we are delivering the best patient care possible.
CIRT is composed of Nurses Peer Support Workers Social Workers and Psychiatrists while the CL service is Psychiatrists and Nurse Educators.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Work closely with an interdisciplinary team and collaborate on care planning: Develop and implement care plans with interdisciplinary teams across non-psychiatric units integrating psychiatric and medical needs.
- Support and empower point-of-care nurses: Act as a clinical resource for bedside nurses building confidence and capacity to manage patients with mental health concerns.
- Gather patient collateral: Collect key information from patients families and records to inform consult recommendations and education strategies.
- Liaise with community teams: Coordinate with community providers to promote continuity of care and support staff education around available resources.
- Triage and prioritize based on acuity: Monitor consult requests and direct educational and clinical support to the most urgent cases.
- Promote best practice and continuous improvement: Integrate evidence-based psychiatric care standards into staff education quality improvement and policy updates.
What You Bring
Education Training and Experience
- Registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant or in mental health services and extended and intermediate care registration as a practicing RN or RPN registrant.
- Two (2) years recent related experience in the area of specialty/practice or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to teach coach and provide clinical support.
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures appropriate for the area of service.
- Ability to identify learning needs and develop educational programs.
- Ability to provide and/or develop resource materials including educational materials.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of adult education principles.
- Ability to lead a group.
- Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to apply decision making and analytical skills.

Your Day to Day:
- Coaches staff in clinical nursing skills and behaviours by role modeling and through individual and group teaching.
- Assesses plans implements and evaluates nursing education programs within the clinical area in collaboration with the Patient Care Manager Director of Professional Practice and Nursing other nursing staff and other health care team members. Assesses requests for programs validates learning needs through needs assessment and consultation develops proposals and new programs as required to meet learning needs coordinates and schedules educational activities identifies outcome indicators and evaluates and revises programs accordingly.
- Assesses patients/families physical emotional and mental readiness and ability to learn through physical assessments discussions completion of questionnaires chart review and through collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Organizes resources supplies and equipment for patient/family home as required. Develops educational materials for patient/family such as pamphlets brochures instruction sheets and manuals.
- Teaches patient and or significant others(s) to administer treatments and operate equipment safely both at home and in the hospital.
- Coaches patient/family to develop and maintain health promoting behaviours within the context of the illness or disease and advocates for patient/family when they are unable to do so for themselves.
- Monitors patient progress by adjusting plan of care to ensure optimum patient outcomes maintaining contact with patient at home and/or liaising with outside agencies and linking patient with community-based resources or referral options as required. Maintains and updates patient treatment records statistics and other necessary documentation. Participates in interdisciplinary rounds and provides input regarding patient/family progress.
- Identifies trends in patient outcomes and make recommendations to the Patient Care Manager and/or Director of Professional Practice and Nursing on program modifications. Develops implements and evaluates patient education programs.
- Participates in research activities and the development of quality improvement initiatives with program/service by as promoting the use of research findings into practice and incorporating information into policies procedures reference materials educational materials and teaching sessions. Acts on recommendations from interdisciplinary team regarding changes/modifications to educational materials handouts and in-service sessions.
- Supports nursing practice across PHC and represents the program/service by taking part in nursing hospital/organization wide and community committees designing implementing and evaluating hospital/organization wide educational programs liaising with external agencies and reporting information back to the program/service. Participates as a member of a teaching group. Teaches other members of the interdisciplinary team as required and acts as a clinical consultant to internal and external health care professionals in area of expertise.
- Provides direct nursing care including physical assessments and administering medications and treatments.
- Participates as requested by the Patient Care Manager and/or staff member in performance planning and coaching by providing input into staff development preparing and presenting educational materials and in-service sessions related to program/service or area of expertise.
- Reviews program policies and procedures and makes recommendations to the Patient Care Manager and/or Director of Professional Practice and Nursing for changes. Updates as approved.
- Monitors evaluates and makes recommendations to the Patient Care Manager regarding physical space equipment supplies and staffing requirements.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
