Stuart Hall School an independent Episcopal day and boarding school serving grades 6-12 seeks its next Head Boys JV Basketball Coach & Assistant Varsity Coach. This is an opportunity to work with our Boys Varsity basketball program during an important moment in the Schools history. The Varsity team won their first Division IV VISAA state tournament in March of 2025 and were the Division III VISAA runner-up in March of 2026. This position serves as the Head JV Coach as well as the assistant Varsity coach.
Position Highlight
The Head Coach will:
- Implement practice plans and game day coaching for 12-15 students
- Be a positive role model for the students they guide on and off the court
- Develop and improve the individual skills of the student athletes by teaching the fundamentals of the game
- Collaborate with the head coach to build a healthy and successful team culture; promote not only individual skills but the importance of teamwork
- Willingness to drive a 14 passenger bus to and from away games as needed
Required background and experience
- Minimum of one year of coaching experience
- Experience with skill development
- Experience with team building
- Demonstrate patience the ability to connect with students in grades 7-12 and a strong commitment to diversity equity and inclusion
- Strong written and oral communication skills
Preferred Qualifications (absences will not harm application)
- Demonstrated experience taking initiative and working independently
- Demonstrated experience designing implementing and managing a program or initiative that involved leading others this experience does not have to be basketball-related
- Prior experience in game coaching
- Critical thinking and listening skills
- Interest and enthusiasm for working with people and advancing the mission of an organization
- Connections to the community
Pay and Season Information
This position pays $1600 per season. The season runs from mid October to late February. Time commitment is approximately 5 nights per week between practice and games during the season. There are approximately 20-30 games in the season evenly split between home and away. Away games are within a 2 hour drive of Staunton. There is a possibility of some overnight tournaments. There are also some weekend practices and games.
