The Role:

To deliver outstanding teaching learning and assessment that enables apprentices to develop the knowledge skills and behaviours required for successful completion of the Plumbing & Gas apprenticeship standards.

The postholder will ensure high-quality delivery of both the technical certificate and the on-site portfolio maintaining full compliance with awarding organisation and EQA requirements while driving timely achievement and high professional standards.


Key Responsibilities


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Plan and deliver high-quality engaging and inclusive lessons that stretch and challenge all apprentices both in the classroom and workshop environments
  2. Deliver the technical certificate and practical training to a consistently high standard ensuring clear sequencing and progression of learning
  3. Integrate theory practical skills and behaviours to reflect real industry practice
  4. Use a wide range of teaching strategies and adaptive approaches to meet individual learner needs
  5. Embed English maths digital skills and British values meaningfully within teaching
  6. Create a positive professional learning environment that promotes high expectations respect and industry standards
  7. Assess apprentice work rigorously and consistently in line with awarding body requirements
  8. Maintain accurate timely and auditable records to meet EQA and internal quality assurance requirements
  9. Track apprentice progress closely identifying gaps early and implementing targeted interventions
  10. Contribute to high achievement rates and timely success minimising withdrawals and breaks in learning
  11. Prepare apprentices effectively for End Point Assessment (EPA)
  12. Actively participate in progress reviews with apprentices and employers ensuring:
  13. Work collaboratively with Skills Development Coaches to ensure aligned delivery of on- and off-the-job training
  14. Support the planning and delivery of off-the-job training in line with apprenticeship funding rules
  15. Build strong relationships with employers to ensure training meets industry and workplace needs
  16. Set and maintain high professional expectations for apprentice attendance behaviour punctuality and work quality
  17. Model industry-standard behaviours and safe working practices at all times
  18. Promote a culture of aspiration accountability and continuous improvement within the department
  19. Challenge underperformance constructively and consistently
  20. Contribute to curriculum planning design and sequencing to ensure high-quality apprenticeship provision
  21. Engage in self-assessment quality improvement planning and deep dives
  22. Respond positively to lesson observations learning walks and feedback demonstrating continuous improvement
  23. Keep up to date with industry developments regulations and technologies within plumbing and gas
  24. Contribute to the colleges strategic objectives and apprenticeship provision growth
  25. Participate in open evenings employer events and recruitment activities
  26. Support cross-college activities such as enrolment and assessment periods
  27. Ensure compliance with safeguarding Prevent health & safety GDPR and all college policies
  28. Engage fully in continuing professional development

Key Expectations:
  1. Outstanding teaching is the core priority of this role
  2. All apprentices make good or better progress
  3. High achievement and timely completion rates are maintained
  4. Full compliance with funding and awarding body requirements is achieved
  5. Apprentices demonstrate professional behaviours aligned to industry expectations


Skills Knowledge and Expertise


Essential:

  • Relevant plumbing and gas qualification (Level 3 or above)
  • Assessor qualification (e.g. CAVA)
  • Significant industry experience in plumbing and gas engineering
  • Experience of delivering or assessing apprenticeships or vocational programmes
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Apprenticeship standards and KSBs
    • Technical certificate and on-site portfolio requirements
    • EQA and quality assurance processes
  • Ability to deliver high-quality teaching learning and assessment
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Commitment to high standards learner progress and timely achievement
  • Willingness to work towards a recognised teaching qualification (if not already held)

Desirable:

  • Teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE Cert Ed)
  • Internal Quality Assurance qualification
  • Gas Safe registration (where applicable)
  • Experience with plumbing/gas qualifications
  • Experience preparing apprentices for End Point Assessment
  • Experience in Building Services Engineering Craftsperson
