What is the role

As an Intermediate Noise and Vibration Engineer/Specialist Building Acoustics at LEA you will analyze model and evaluate noise and vibration in buildings and infrastructure projects. You will review architectural and mechanical designs for acoustic performance perform field measurements prepare technical reports and recommend practical mitigation solutions. In this role your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Review architectural mechanical and electrical drawings/shop drawings for acoustic integrity (e.g. partition terminations penetrations sealing vibration isolation details); provide detailed recommendations and working drawings as needed.
  • Prepare technical analyses using commercial software packages (e.g. Cadna/A TNM SoundPlan STAMSON INSUL) and proprietary in-house tools for environmental noise/vibration predictions impact assessments mitigation design and building acoustics evaluations (e.g. partition STC/ASTC/IIC modelling HVAC/equipment noise propagation vibration isolation).
  • Complete high-quality technical reports with minimal supervision including baseline assessments compliance evaluations mitigation recommendations Acoustic Design Reviews Noise Impact Studies (NIS) acoustic specification documents Vibration Impact Studies Construction Noise and Vibration Management Plans and any reporting required to support environmental approvals/permitting building code compliance and Tarion warranty processes.
  • Communicate technical findings potential impacts and recommended mitigation measures (e.g. partition upgrades silencer specifications vibration isolators) clearly to internal teams clients regulatory agencies builders and stakeholders (e.g. via meetings presentations or public consultations).
  • Collaborate closely with project managers architects mechanical/electrical engineers and multidisciplinary teams throughout all phases of project delivery from initial scoping and proposal development to detail design construction and warranty/commissioning.
  • Manage multiple active projects simultaneously balancing priorities to meet schedules budgets and deliverables.
  • Prepare high-quality proposals for private clients (e.g. developers architects) as well as responses to larger-scale Requests for Proposal (RFP) and Expressions of Interest (EOI).
  • Stay current with industry standards software advancements regulatory changes (including Tarion updates) and best practices to ensure compliance and innovative solutions in building acoustics.
  • Conduct noise and vibration field measurements at industrial residential institutional transportation and construction sites including setup calibration data collection processing interpretation and specialized building acoustics testing (e.g. ASTC field testing on partitions per ASTM E336 background noise for NC criteria mock-up partition evaluations and post-construction commissioning to verify acoustic performance).
  • Participate in professional development opportunities including training workshops seminars and involvement in professional associations to maintain and enhance industry knowledge and skills.
  • Support additional assignments within the Transportation & Systems Division.

The qualifications you need:

  • Bachelors degree (or higher) in Engineering (Acoustical Mechanical Civil Environmental or related field) Physics Environmental Science or equivalent.
  • Eligibility for Professional Engineer (.) designation in Ontario (or current registration/eligibility with PEO) upon completion of required experience.
  • Minimum of 36 years of relevant consulting experience in environmental noise/vibration and building acoustics assessments (e.g. residential institutional mixed-use shelter/transitional housing developments; transportation industrial or construction sectors).
  • Strong demonstrated expertise in building/architectural acoustics including:
    1. Experience in the development and selection of acoustic specifications for sound transmission between spaces (e.g. residential/family units to administrative/common areas) background noise levels Speech Transmission Index (STI) and speech privacy;
    2. Understanding of key criteria from internationally recognised design criteria and guidelines (ANSI ASTM ASHRAE ISO etc.) and metrics including STC (Sound Transmission Class) ASTC (Apparent Sound Transmission Class) NIC (Noise Isolation Class) NC/PNC/RC (Noise Criteria/Room Criteria) IIC (Impact Insulation Class) STI (Speech Transmission Index) RT60 (Reverberation Time) etc.;
    3. Proficiency in completing Acoustic Design Reviews for partitions floors and ceilings (assessing/recommending STC/ASTC/IIC ratings; identifying flanking paths; ensuring compliance with OBC Tarion Builder Bulletin 19R requirements and Tarion warranty acoustic performance standards);
    4. Familiarity with the fundamentals of indoor HVAC and mechanical/electrical noise prediction and attenuation (airborne duct-borne and structure-borne transmission; NC/RC/PNC criteria; vibration isolation for equipment such as elevators pumps boilers chillers and rooftop units); and
    5. Room acoustics modelling and treatment (e.g. RT60 acoustic absorption and silencing)
  • Strong client-facing skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams (architects mechanical/electrical engineers developers) to develop practical project-specific acoustic solutions
  • Solid understanding of environmental noise and vibration principles including:
    1. Predictive roadway and railway noise and vibration models (e.g. FTA STEAM TNM ORNAMENT).
    2. Fundamental sound and vibration propagation algorithms
  • Proficiency with industry-standard modelling software such as Cadna/A STAMSON TNM INSUL SoundPLAN EASE or equivalent tools.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Ontario environmental legislation and guidelines including but not limited to the Environmental Protection Act MECP Noise Pollution Protocol (NPC) Publications (e.g. NPC-300) municipal noise bylaws and the MTO Environmental Guide for Noise.
  • Familiarity with sound level meters (SLMs) dosimeters noise and vibration monitors and data acquisition systems (e.g. Brüel & Kjær Sigicom Larson Davis); hands-on experience conducting sound level and vibration measurements at both source and receptor locations including long-term monitoring attended surveys compliance with ISO/IEC standards and field acoustic testing (e.g. ASTC per ASTM E336 NIC background NC measurements).
  • Strong writing and presentation skills with proven ability to prepare clear concise technical reports (e.g. Acoustic Design Reviews Noise/Vibration Impact Study reports specification documents) and communicate complex findings to non-technical audiences

Assets (Nice to Have)

  • Programming or scripting skills (e.g. Python MATLAB) for data processing automation or custom acoustic analysis.
  • Experience with advanced signal processing techniques and tools.
  • Familiarity with additional modelling tools for rail transit international standards (ISO 1996 ANSI) or advanced room acoustics simulation (e.g. EASE RAP-ONE II).
  • Hands-on experience with Tarion-compliant acoustic field testing certification processes or warranty investigations in residential/institutional developments.
  • Previous involvement in large-scale environmental impact assessments (EIAs) transit projects renewable energy developments or institutional/healthcare/shelter acoustic designs.
  • Membership in professional organizations (e.g. CAA INCE ASA).
