Archaeological Field Technician (Seasonal / Project-Term)
Located in the North Thompson valley at Simpcw Resources LLP we provide environmental ecological and cultural resource services while preserving Simpcw culture and heritage with respect for the environment. Our mission is to support sustainable economic development within the Simpcwulécw (Simpcw Territory) by delivering high-quality services.
Job Summary
The Archaeological Field Technician supports archaeological assessment programs including shovel and auger testing for largescale development and infrastructure projects. This projectterm position runs from March to October/November 2026 and provides handson onthejob training in archaeological field methods while working alongside experienced archaeologists and field supervisors.
Work is based primarily in the Barriere and North Thompson region with travel to nearby field sites as required. Fieldwork may include long days and multiday rotations depending on project needs. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy physical outdoor work and contributing to a collaborative safetyfocused field team. Successful candidates are expected to follow safe work practices maintain strong situational awareness and demonstrate professionalism in all field activities.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct systematic shovel testing in accordance with approved archaeological methodologies and permit requirements.
- Assist with auger testing programs including coordination with equipment operators and archaeological staff.
- Screen soils identify potential artifacts or cultural materials and communicate findings to supervisors.
- Record and manage field data using GPS units tablets field forms photographs and written notes.
- Support archaeological site evaluations and mitigation activities while assisting with field equipment preparation mobilization site setup access preparation and demobilization.
- Follow all company health and safety policies procedures and projectspecific safety plans including participation in required safety orientations
- Apply safe work practices during physically demanding tasks and proactively identify and communicate potential hazards
- Adhere to applicable legislation permit requirements and best management practices related to cultural resources
- Collaborate with supervisors archaeologists technicians and partners while contributing to a positive team environment and communicating professionally with stakeholders
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Strong interest in cultural heritage protection land stewardship and working in outdoor environments.
- Strong communication teamwork and organizational skills.
- Ability to follow direction and maintain attention to detail during repetitive tasks.
- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and physically capable of completing field tasks safely. Related physical requirements include:
- Ability to perform sustained manual labor outdoors often for extended periods.
- Ability to lift carry and move loadsof soil up to 1050 lbs.
- Ability to dig using hand toolswith repetitive upper-body motion.
- Ability to screen excavated soilsusing hand-held and stationary screens requiring repetitive lifting shaking and bending.
- Ability to stand walk kneel crouch squat twist and bendfor prolonged periods on uneven terrain slopes and unstable surfaces.
- Ability to follow safe lifting techniques.
- Valid Class 5 drivers licence is preferred.
- Standard First Aid (or willingness to obtain) is an asset.
- Enrollment in or completion of a related Archaeology or Anthropology program as well as previous BC archaeological or fieldwork experience are considered assets but are not required.
