Job Summary

POSITION: Woods Boss (Field Supervisor)

POSITION TYPE: Seasonal

LOCATION: Based in Eugene OR but will require travel to remote training and project locations throughout the season which will include travel to projects in ID and WA as needed. DATES: Training: 5/4/26-5/12/26 Session: 5/12/26-8/29/26

COMPENSATION: Training rate: $700/week. Session rate: $975 per week; $1007.50/week returner OR current WFR or WEMT certification; $1040/week returner AND WFR/WEMT; transportation campsites and meals provided.

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

Since 1984 Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) a non-profit organization has given tens of thousands of youth and young adults opportunities to learn grow and experience success. Through partnerships with conservation agencies youth and young adults gain the personal and professional skills needed to carry out a variety of stewardship projects from which they can earn a paycheck high school credit and/or an AmeriCorps educational award. More importantly these young people gain skills needed to become economically and socially self-sufficient benefit their communities as citizen stewards and recognize that they can make a positive difference.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Woods Boss will spend the duration of their time with NYC travelling to crews throughout the Pacific Northwest providing both personal and technical support. This includes but is not limited to ensuring projects are up to our partner and NYC specifications and NYC standards camps are to NYC standards; that they are clean safe and follow organizational protocol; and that seasonal staff presents a rich educational program. This position will also include giving project specific technical support to crews which may include trail maintenance and construction fence maintenance and construction invasive species removal and fuels reduction. A Woods Boss will manage weekends recreational trips and be responsible for resupplying some crew food tools and equipment.

Someone in this position should enjoy using the outdoors as a platform for personal growth and professional skills development. A Woods boss should remain flexible with work assignments but unwavering in their dedication to building safe and productive crews.

Strong technical and outdoor skills are desired however a Wood boss truly requires strong ethics and communication skills a willingness to face challenges as they arise and a commitment to providing positive mentorship to leaders and participants.

Position Qualifications & Certifications

  • Education: Preferred college education in outdoor recreation forestry environmental

education resource management or related field. (can be substituted with relevant experience)

  • Experience: Experience leading or supervising a group or team in outdoor or conservation projects. The ideal candidate will have previous experience as a leader in the outdoor field or conservation corps program. We are seeking individuals with both technical skills to support crews on a variety of conservation projects and interpersonal skills to serve as a mentor to staff and participants.
  • Certification: Current wilderness first aid/CPR or higher certifications are required; or willing to obtain prior to start.
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate an acceptable driving record during the last three years.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal history background check
  • Must be at least 20 at start of employment
  • Consistent and reliable attendance

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Physical Condition: Applicants must be in good physical condition and capable of working long hours on strenuous labor intensive projects. Work projects often require heavy lifting constant bending digging and long hikes to and from the worksite.
  • Applicants must be able to backpack 7 miles and lift up to 50 lbs (with or without reasonable accommodation).
  • Position will require working and camping outside in different locations for the course of the season and in all types of weather conditions and environments.
