Director Capacity Engineering

The Role

TheDirectorofCapacity Engineeringwill be globally responsible for leading the team technologyand processes whichprovidecapacity planning andcapacitydeliveryservicestoF5sSaaSplatform(networkcomputesecurity datacenter). The ideal candidate for this role has deepcapacity planning and provisioning/deliveryleadershipexperience at consumerwebscale.You areverifiablywell-known within the industry andhave deep active relationships with your peers in similar companies.


Youare drawn to disruptivetechnology andare excited by the idea ofdriving velocity and maturity into an existing SaaS platform and team.Youthinklong-term andcan field personnel and processes that ensure F5s SaaS platform isconsistentlyright-sizedrelativeto demand.You intrinsically know which capacity levels to pull and when to pull them.Youcan balancecostwithgoodcapacity optimizationchoices andare unafraid to provide constructive feedback to any level of leadership.Youhavedeep experience working with leadership at our capacitysuppliers andcan work directly with them to ensure F5s needs are met.You are an engineerfirst andcanengage the best engineers in your team(or F5s most senior executives)in a detailed good-spiritedtechnical debate.You are a mentorand coachat leastas much as you are a manager.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the team responsible forprovidingnetworkcomputedatacenter and securitycapacity planning and deliveryservicestoF5s SaaS suite of products

  • Engineertheinfrastructurecapacityplanand delivery timelinessuch that F5s SaaS platformscan deliveroptimalperformance at99.99%availability

  • Partner closely with the procurement and finance teams to ensure that the capacity plan is well-understood anddocuementedwithin the context of the budget

  • Drive automationinto the capacity lifecycle including capacity planning/data science capacity delivery/provisioning and decommissioning activities

  • DevelopdocumentandpublishrelevantKPIs

  • Work collaboratively withproductteams and infrastructure architectureto ensurethat the capacity plans reflect the approved product roadmap well in advance of need

  • Curate and execute the full infrastructure lifecycle from planning to decommissioning activities.

  • Maintain a flawless closed-loop inventory of services and dependencies such that spenddoesntget lost during a capacity changemoveor decom

  • Partner with the product sales andarchtiectureteams to drivedecision-makingon partner selection (colo compute security network)

  • Partner with network engineering todriveF5sconnectivity partnership&strategyprograms(including cloud on-ramp and peering)drivingminimum latency and cost tothemaximumpopulation of customers.

  • Act as a peer to the architectureoperations automation andengineeringleaders.

  • Produce a quarterly all-up capacity roadmap including hardware telecommunications security and datacenter space/power assets.

  • Initiate track execute and closeall capacity changes to F5s SaaS infrastructure

  • Drive data science into the capacity planning process using industry best practices to make data-drivenassessmentsof future capacity needs.

  • Provide regular vendor forecasts ensuring that our capacity roadmap interlocks with those of our vendors

  • Lead negotiations withF5ssupplier partners. Ensure contracts and associated covenants strike the right blend of cost and businessbenefit.

  • Identifyand create new ways ofprocuringassets that F5s SaaS platform needs tooperatewhichare accretive to the platforms overall margin and operating profile.

  • You weavecostandavailabilityinto everycapacitydecision balancing themtoF5s benefit

  • Have10 years ofprogressiveconsumerwebscaleor equivalentcapacity planning and/or delivery experience.

  • Behighlycapable of assessing the state of an initiativemaking independent decisions/commitments and being held accountable to them.

  • Be able to proactivelyidentifyimpending capacity-related gaps and independentlyinitiateand execute remediation activities.

  • You are supremely capableofdesigning and executingcomplex globalcapacityupliftprogramswithoutinducing customer impact.

  • Youcanconfidentlyand appropriatelymessage status and plans internally and externally.

  • You measure everythingand act on data.

  • Youunderstand thatinfrastructureoperationsisyourcustomer andare always ready to jump in and help when needed.You drive this ethos into yourteamas well.

  • You have extensive experience in theconnectivitystrategy and peering ecosystem.You know how to structure globalinterconnect programs formin(latency)impactingmax(customer).

  • Partner withyour peer organizationsclosely and openlyensuring that capacity requirements are well-understood and actioned significantly in advance of need.

  • You know who to call in thebroaderindustry whenwe need to fix a capacity issue quickly.

  • You havesignificant experienceworkinginboth retail andwholesaledatacenterenvironments.

  • You can readily mapF5s articulatedcolocationneeds tofacilitiesincorporating availabilitymetrics/telemetry compliance needscommercial termsconnectivitypartersand facilitydesign/engineering.

  • Your experience inthe wholesaleand retail connectivity space iswell-known. You know exactly what connectivity assets should cost and driveF5scontracts into those commercial terms.

  • You havesignificant experienceprocuringwholesalecompute both as prebuilt systems and as well as at thecomponentlevel. You are comfortableoptimizingyour procurement strategy for cost and deliverability.

  • F5scustomerssee you as anally andseek your input about how they should solvetheir own complexcapacitychallenges.

  • Your team comesto youwith challenges (personal or professional) without fear of judgment or reprisal. They view you as an ally and advocate.

The annual base pay for this position is: $260800.00 - $391200.00

F5 maintains broad salary ranges for its roles in order to account for variations in knowledge skills experience geographic locations and market conditions as well as to reflect F5s differing products industries and lines of business. The pay range referenced is as of the time of the job posting and is subject to change.
