Associate Director Pre-Professional Initiatives

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Graduate and Fellowships Initiatives at Beyond Barnard the Associate Director of Pre-Professional Initiatives will provide advising and support to students and alumnae of Barnard College seeking admission to law school health professions programs masters of business administration programs and other professional degrees as appropriate. The Associate Director will lead administration of Barnards Health Professions Advisory Committee. The incumbent will manage relationships with health law and business school partners and plan events and information sessions under the supervision of the Senior Associate Director and collaboration of the Beyond Barnard Team. The Associate Director will also support general career well-being initiatives at Beyond Barnard well-being programs in the Division of Community Engagement & Lifelong Support and other initiatives as appropriate.

Job Description:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise students individually and in groups on all matters pertaining to curriculum choices the timing of graduate exams balancing curricular goals with other interests and application processes for pre-professional programs..

  • Present regular workshops and webinars on application processes and best practices for individuals interested in pursuing diverse work associated with the pursuit of pre-professional degree programs. Host information sessions panels and other events to share information and promote career exploration.

  • Oversee all work related to the application of students to the professional schools as well as to post-bacc programs (as appropriate) and related academic enhancement including reviewing and providing feedback on application materials and interview techniques.

  • Serve as chair of the Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) composed of Barnard faculty members. Liaise with academic departments to maintain awareness of academic opportunities and curricular changes. Manage all aspects of Barnards Committee process including collecting applicant materials arranging interviews with HPAC and writing Committee letters.

  • Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain understanding of current opportunities in pre-professional graduate programs and support students in exploration of careers that are aligned with their interests. Attend conferences to be aware of developments and trends in advising and programming best practices.

  • Monitor track and assess application outcomes for students and graduates. Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to analyze and share data with College leadership.

  • Provide administrative leadership of all of Beyond Barnards career and graduate school advising initiatives under the direction of the Senior Associate Director; support Senior Associate Director in administration of Accelerated 41 Pathways; provide advising on these topics as needed contribute to ongoing Beyond Barnard events and workshop series.

  • Contribute to Beyond Barnards programming series including: researching potential speakers and conducting outreach to them coordinating logistics with speakers and campus partners connecting with employers and/or graduate programs regarding recruitment initiatives and participation in Beyond Barnard events delivering content in workshops and information sessions moderating panels and advertising event details to prospective participants.

  • Develop implement and manage best practices around integration of new and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence into advising programming and administrative practices at Beyond Barnard; collaborate where possible with cross-campus technology advisory groups to identify opportunities to leverage these technologies in support career well-being work.

  • Manage in-person and virtual events on evenings and weekends as necessary; support team-wide division-wide and College-wide events as directed.

  • Assume responsibility for special projects as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills Qualifications & Requirements:

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including public speaking/presentation.

  • Facility with current technology and web-based applications.

  • The ability to focus and work quickly to handle multiple tasks set priorities and absorb detail is essential.

  • The ability to understand and adhere to college and national policy and to decipher between confidential and need-to-know information is a must.

  • Ability to build and cultivate relationships with diverse on- and off-campus stakeholders including students alumnae parents staff members faculty members representatives of graduate programs and employers.

  • Maturity sensitivity tact judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Ability to contribute to the tone of professionalism in the office and to remain calm and flexible under pressure

  • Ability to work effectively both as an individual and in a fast-paced and evolving setting that requires extensive cooperation and collaboration among all staff members.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree required.

  • Deep knowledge of pre-professional programs requirements and application processes.

  • Experience working one-on-one with students in an advising capacity.

  • 3-5 years related experience that includes at least 3 years of experience in advising college students and graduates on topics like development and preparation for graduate and professional education as well as experience planning and executing programming.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree.

  • Experience with writing committee letters

  • Track record of teaching or advising students and graduates on strong writing

  • Experience in health professions and law school admissions

  • Experience in using Slate for application management

This job is currently a hybrid position but may require a presence in the office up to five times a week depending on operational needs.

Salary Range: $78000 - $83000 annually

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors including but not limited to departmental budgets qualifications experience education licenses specialty and training. The above hiring range represents the Colleges good faith and reasonable estimateof the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
