Job Summary
In the ED you will provide immediate acute care to our patients. You will triage assess treat and document care. We have 29 beds in our ED. Xrays CTs and ultrasounds are available 24 hours a day and MRIs most of the day. We are also a Primary Stroke Center.The Registered Nurse is a professional nurse registered in Massachusetts who is responsible and accountable for planning and providing patient care for assigned patients in accordance with Nursing Standards of Care as set forth in the Nursing Departments Clinical Practice Manual. The registered nurse demonstrates initiative knowledge and clinical skills in caring for the patient with complex needs. The Registered Nurse demonstrates the ability to effectively manage patients by assuming full responsibility for the assessment plan implementation and evaluation of patient care and is directly responsible to a designated Nursing Director or supervisor. Assure the practice of the Patient and Family Centered Care Model in an environment that exemplifies best practice.

Essential Functions
1. PROVISION OF A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
Maintains patient safety by identifying risk factors and intervening appropriately.
Participates in product trials by evaluating for safety.
Utilizes nursing judgment in implementing physician orders in a safe and conscientious manner. Notifies manager clinical leader or supervisor with any concerns.
2. ORGANIZATIONAL ETHICS
Maintains and promotes an atmosphere which reflects the mission and values of the organization.
Respects and supports a culturally diverse staff and patient population.
Serves as a patient and family advocate in providing care at all times.
Utilizes the proper procedures to resolve patients conflicts i.e. interdisciplinary meeting ethics committee.
3. MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES
Appropriately delegates responsibility to unit secretaries and patient care assistants with an understanding of their roles knowledge and capabilities.
Utilizes staff development to meet educational needs.
The Charge Nurse Role: Completes the assignment for the following shift based on the acuity of patients; Coordinates nursing activities for the unit; Serves as a Clinical Resource for staff on the unit and is aware of all patient conditions; Assists manager or supervisor in determining staffing needs for the next shift; Completes report sheet for the manager or supervisor.
4. MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION
Documents patient care assessment flow sheets and interventions on Meditech system.
Individualizes patient diagnosis and sets goals for all identified patient problems.
Documents patient response to interventions in Meditech and /or nursing notes.
Documents patient incidents in detail as they occur. This includes falls reactions to medications or other injuries.
Gives taped report in concise comprehensive manner.
Utilizes Meditech system to: Check patient orders; views patient results; views cross-departmental communication via E-mail
Anticipates discharge date and initiates nursing referral.
5. COLLABORATIVE INTERDISCIPLINARY CARE
Interacts with all members of health care team to provide interdisciplinary patient care.
Maintains and fosters a team work approach to patient care within the Nursing Department.
6. PATIENT/FAMILY EDUCATION
Determines and incorporates patient/family education into plan of care.
Documents patient teaching and response onto nursing Meditech or nursing notes. Completes discharge teaching with patient and/or family member
7. COMPETENCY
Maintains compliance with hospital nursing and unit specific competencies.
Actively seeks out unit and/or service related Continuing Education classes.
8. QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
Understands unit specific QI plan and participates in audits as required.
Revises patient care based on QI results.
Participates in SEAQ programs.
9. PATIENT CARE
Accurately assesses patients and develops appropriate plan of care based on hospital standards including psychosocial spiritual cultural and physical needs of patients and families.
Implements ordered treatments and dispenses medications according to hospital policy. Maintains standard precautions while delivering care.
Continually evaluates patients status and updates plan of care as needed.
Participates in interdisciplinary rounds.
CONTINUUM OF CARE
Initiates and Coordinates interdisciplinary care planning with other health care professionals i.e. Case Review Dietary PT OT Social Service and Psychiatry.
Participates in post-hospital plan of care with Case Review.
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities: Ancillary staff

Qualifications
BSN required
Massachusetts Registered Nurse Licensure required
BLS Certification for Healthcare Providers required
Must obtain ACLS prior to end of orientation and may not practice independently without ACLS
PALS preferred
ED experience is strongly preferred
2 years telemetry experience preferred
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Adheres to all C.A.R.E. standards.
- The RN must show evidence of the basic analytic thinking necessary to care for a group of patients.
- Must demonstrate observational skills and the ability to set priorities.
- Must be able to function under stress with good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Must demonstrate effective skills in applying hospital standards in area of service team work communication respect for others and time/priority management.
