About the Role
The Climbing Experience Leader is a member of Cougars Athletics and Recreation which actively creates promotes and sustains an environment in which the Mount Royal University community is challenged and supported in pursuit of personal growth in sport and leisure.
Reporting to the Adventure Programming Supervisor the Climbing Experience Leader is part of the programs and services team. The Climbing Experience Leader is responsible for coordinating non-instructional climbing programs and bookings in the MRU Climbing Centre including belaying participants leading games and group facilitation. Experience Leaders can also serve as assistant instructors during educational and skills-based bookings and programs. The ability to effectively manage risks inherent to climbing and attention to detail are integral to success in this position. Competence in top rope and lead climbing risk management including belay techniques with both aperture and assisted braking devices (eg ATC & GriGri) is an asset.
Responsibilities
Customer Experience (45%)
Welcome participants into the facility and highlight key policies & procedures
Belay participants while climbing and facilitate use of auto-belays
Distribute rental equipment and ensure it is returned and put away
Facilitate games and challenges to provide a sense of play
Risk Management (45%)
Actively supervise participants ensuring that all climbers and belayers are safe
Provide coaching and corrective instruction on techniques as necessary
Accessibility and Inclusion (10%)
Ensure programs and services are developed and executed with accommodation for access needs
Ensure people with varying abilities and circumstances feel a sense of belonging in recreation programs and services
Qualifications
- Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent
- 1-6 months relevant previous experience
- Current Mount Royal University student
- Competence in top rope and lead climbing risk management including belay techniques with both aperture and assisted braking devices (eg. ATC & GriGri)
- Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification preferred
Salary: $21.23 - $26.81 per hour
