Job Summary

Introduction


The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (System). The System is a defined benefit retirement system covering governmental employees within the State of Maryland. Its composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with over 50 different rule sets. The System has over 397000 participants (customers) including 192000 members who are actively employed and participating in the System 165000 payees who receive a monthly payment from the System and 40000 vested members who are no longer actively employed but have earned a benefit that will become payable at a future date.

Main Purpose of Job

The Investment Associate of Corporate Governance is responsible for assisting with the development and execution of Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) and Diversity initiatives and the monitoring evaluation and quantification of related risks and effects on the Systems investment portfolio. The responsibilities include assisting with managing the Systems divestment programs to ensure compliance with laws supporting the development and execution of the Governance and Proxy Voting program and assisting with related tasks to ensure the Systems governance program objectives are met.

POSITION DUTIES

Position duties includebut are not limited to the following:

Assist with Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) and Diversityinitiatives and tasks to integrate ESG into investment due diligence processesacross asset classes.

Support tracking and reporting on ESG and Diversityinitiative efforts by external and internal managers and other related ESGdata.

Assist with the development of any ESG related reportsrequired by the Legislature or as necessary for the Investment Divisionincluding the annual Climate Risk Report.

Assist with assessing and partnering with external dataproviders including managers and consultants to analyze define andprioritize relevant ESG and Diversity metrics.

Assist with managing meetings and minutes of the ClimateAdvisory Panel.

Assist with conducting ESG analyses/analytics of potentialand existing investments.

Support generation of documents and information related tothe Investment Divisions integration of ESG and climate change-related factorsinto investment due diligence.

Assist with the evaluation of divestment laws to determine compliance.

Identifyand monitor existing and potential companies that may be or are subject toMaryland divestment laws.

Assist with reporting divestment activities to management the legislature and the Board of Trustees.

Assist with managing the proxy voting process andensure that proxies are voted in accordance with the Systems custom proxyguidelines.

Maintain knowledge of best practices and currenttrends in corporate governance topics.

Assist with engagement activities related tocorporate governance topics.

Assist with managing meetings and minutes of theCorporate Governance and Securities Litigation Committee.

Assist with the development update anddocumentation of governance and proxy voting policies procedures andprocesses.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduated from an accredited four-yearcollege or university with a bachelors degree.

Experience: Applicants can substitute a minimum of threeyears of relevant experience in corporate governance ESG/Sustainability and investments or finance for the required education qualification.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of and experience with the following:
Experience with Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) and Diversityintegration including external manager due diligence.
Experience with ESG regulatory standards setting and shareholder engagement organizations ESG measurement tools ESG data applications and rating systems.
Experience with extracting insights from ESG data analysis/analytics to inform investment decisions.
Experience with Corporate governance the proxy voting process and investment stewardship best practices.
Experience with Adobe PDF Microsoft Office including robust Excel skills (pivot tables complex formulas large data sets) anda working knowledge of the Python programming language.
