Job Summary
The National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II) is a DOE-funded scientific user facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Spectroscopy Program within the Physical Sciences & Research Operations Division provides advanced X-ray spectroscopy tools to study complex materials under real-world conditions with a focus on understanding and improving materials used in energy storage catalysis and other applications involving non-ambient and complex dynamic environments. The program includes four NSLS-II operated beamlines as well as three partner beamlines stewarded by NIST covering soft tender and hard X-ray spectroscopy.
Position Description
The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking a Scientific Associate to support the Spectroscopy Program. This program encompasses seven beamlines four NSLS-II beamlines (IOS ISS QAS TES) and three NIST partner beamlines (BMM SST-1 SST-2) offering comprehensive in situ spectroscopy capabilities spanning soft to hard x-rays. The program is also advancing cutting-edge techniques including high-throughput and autonomous beamline operation as well as mechanism-driven materials optimization.
The successful candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of beamline scientists engineers technicians and support staff to contribute to beamline technical development and operational support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct beamline technical development for the Spectroscopy Program
Provide operational support across program beamlines such as beamline configuration
Manage assigned program laboratory spaces and user training
Scheduling and supervising others as necessary
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
Proven experience using mechanical design software
Strong programming skills in Python and C
Hand-on experience in lab instrumentation
Good verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment with scientists engineers technical staff and users
Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Masters degree
Minimum of three (3) years progressively responsible related work experience including supporting scientific research programs following established methods and standards for investigation and experimentation.
Demonstrated successful experience with automation such as robotics
Demonstrated successful experience with AI/ML tools (e.g. TensorFlow PyTorch)
Hand-on experience working with large-scale scientific instrumentation (e.g. synchrotron radiation beamlines)
Experience with EPICS IOC development

You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.
