Job Description

This position supports the Patrick M. Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities in advancing community health and improving outcomes for infants children adolescents and families across Chicago. The Student Program Assistant is a paid 10-week summer opportunity designed for current undergraduate or graduate students interested in public health healthcare and community-based work. This experience offers hands exposure to real-world projects mentorship from experienced professionals and opportunities to build practical skills in a collaborative mission-driven environment.

The Magoon Institute leads community-focused initiatives at Lurie Childrens aligning clinical care advocacy research and education with community engagement. The team partners across the hospital and with community organizations to advance health outcomes and address key drivers of health across Chicago.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop a strong understanding of Lurie Childrens mission and community health strategy
  • Gain hands-on experience contributing to a defined project aligned with departmental priorities
  • Build skills in communication teamwork and project management
  • Strengthen administrative technical and interpersonal skills in a professional setting
  • Work on a defined project (independently or as part of a team) with scope and deliverables developed in collaboration with your supervisor based on dept/program needs and your interests
  • Support dept/program operations and initiatives including activities such as data collection meeting coordination event support and communication
  • Participate in meetings and community-based activities to gain exposure to real-world public health and healthcare work
  • Meet regularly with your supervisor to discuss progress challenges and learning goals
  • Complete community volunteer training and participate in at least one service experience
  • Prepare a final summary of your work including key deliverables and contributions
  • Complete a reflective summary of your experience and learning outcomes
  • Present your work and reflections to staff
  • Other job functions as assigned

This is a 10-week part-time (1824 hours/week) summer position typically beginning in June. A flexible hybrid schedule is available including time in the office at home and in the community.

Knowledge SKILLS and Abilities:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Attention to detail and good organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in face-to-face interactions with research staff physicians and administrative staff.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong communication organization and time management skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment
  • Willingness to occasionally work evenings/weekends and travel throughout Chicago (via public transportation or personal vehicle)
  • Ability to engage respectfully and effectively with individuals from various backgrounds and disciplines

Pay Range

$18.00-$27.00 Hourly

At Lurie Childrens we are committed to competitive and fair compensation aligned with market rates and internal equity reflecting individual contributions experience and expertise. The pay range for this job indicates minimum and maximum targets for the position.
