Role Overview
The Windows Unix & VM Lead is responsible for managing server operating systems and virtualization infrastructure across on-premise data centres and cloud environments.
This role ensures high availability security performance and operational efficiency of Windows Linux and AIX environments while leading initiatives related to server lifecycle management infrastructure optimization and virtualization platform support.
The role also provides technical leadership to L2 analysts and ensures alignment with enterprise governance compliance and service standards.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Server Infrastructure Leadership
Lead server consolidation and optimisation initiatives across enterprise environments.
Oversee deployment patching and lifecycle management of Windows Linux and AIX servers.
Manage virtualization platforms including VMware Nutanix or Hyper-V environments.
Virtualization & Data Center Operations
Maintain and support the hypervisor and virtualization layers used across AVON infrastructure.
Maintain and support cluster environments across AVON Data Centers (on-premise and VMC on AWS).
Ensure high availability performance optimisation and capacity planning.
Governance & Compliance
Participate in governance reporting and service review meetings.
Ensure server environments align with SLA requirements reporting standards and compliance policies.
Support audit and compliance activities including remediation of audit findings.
Security & Risk Management
Ensure systems follow security hardening standards and patch management processes.
Oversee secure decommissioning and disposal of end-of-life hardware.
Maintain secure identity and authentication integrations across platforms.
Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery
Support backup strategies and disaster recovery planning for server environments.
Ensure resilience and recovery readiness across infrastructure platforms.
Vendor & Operational Management
Manage vendor relationships and coordinate with third-party support providers.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives across server management processes.
Team Leadership
Mentor and guide L2 Support Analysts in server administration and troubleshooting.
Promote operational best practices and technical skill development within the team.
Required Skills & Expertise
Operating Systems
Advanced administration of Windows Server Linux and AIX
Experience with CIS hardening and enterprise patch orchestration
Virtualization Platforms
Expertise in VMware Nutanix Hyper-V
VM clustering high availability and virtualization infrastructure management
Identity & Security
Strong Active Directory expertise including GPO strategy and secure administration
Linux/AIX identity integration (SSSD PAM Kerberos) and SSH key management
Performance & Monitoring
Performance engineering skills including:
Perfmon
Event logs
IOPS and system performance analysis
Certificates & Encryption
Experience with TLS/PKI configuration for Windows services
Certificate lifecycle and renewal management
Backup & Disaster Recovery
Server backup strategies and disaster recovery planning
Endpoint & Security Monitoring
Experience with EDR agent health monitoring and endpoint security coverage
Infrastructure Lifecycle
End-of-Life remediation planning and OS/platform migration projects
Documentation & Operations
Strong documentation practices and CMDB management
Ability to mentor L2 engineers and support operational excellence

Required Skills:
Service Transition & Project Management Expertise in planning coordinating and executing end-to-end IT service transitions ensuring operational readiness and smooth go-live. ITIL & Service Management Frameworks Strong understanding and application of ITIL principles across incident change and configuration management. Technical Proficiency Solid background in Field Service Operations IoT/Smart Device Installations Infrastructure Support and familiarity with ITSM/FSM tools (e.g. ServiceNow Salesforce Field Service FSM360). Leadership & Stakeholder Management Proven ability to lead cross-functional global teams and build strong relationships with clients vendors and internal teams. Analytical & Governance Skills - Strong capability in documentation governance risk management and KPI tracking to drive continuous improvement and service excellence.
