Job Description
General Description
The Engineer E4 is a professional engineer or geoscientist responsible for applying engineering expertise to deliver engineering design estimating planning and quality management services for medium-complexity projects and operations. The role supports the successful execution of projects by ensuring work is completed safely with high quality within budget and on schedule.
This position supports BC Hydros Transmission Reactive Equipment & Switchgear engineering team and contributes to capital projects emergency equipment replacements restoration work asset management initiatives and Owners Engineer reviews. The engineer will work within a multidisciplinary team environment and provide technical expertise in substation equipment design and installation for high-voltage utility infrastructure.
Experience and Role Accountabilities
A minimum of eight (8) years of experience in a relevant engineering field or equivalent is required.
Key responsibilities include:
Develop safe and effective engineering solutions using sound engineering judgment to perform tasks such as design development analysis troubleshooting and interpretation of engineering specifications for medium-complexity BC Hydro projects and operations.
Support project and operations management in meeting safety cost quality and schedule objectives by proposing changes to plans and cost estimates recommending contractor payments preparing progress reports and coordinating work schedules.
Resolve complex technical design and field engineering issues by conducting independent engineering studies and analyses interpreting technical information and recommending safe and practical engineering solutions.
Participate in BC Hydros professional engineering practice by contributing to technical standards development exercising professional judgment in engineering decisions and providing guidance to junior engineers.
Support engineering project activities including design coordination scope management schedule planning and cost tracking.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external contractors to ensure engineering deliverables meet BC Hydro standards and operational requirements.
Role Specialty Transmission Reactive Equipment & Switchgear
This role requires experience with the design of electrical utility substations operating from 12 kV to 500 kV and demonstrated experience developing engineering solutions within an electric utility environment.
The successful candidate will have specialized knowledge of high-voltage substation equipment specification design and installation.
Reactive Equipment Experience may include:
Series capacitor stations
STATCOM systems
Power transformers
Shunt reactors
Instrument transformers
Switchgear Equipment Experience may include:
High-voltage circuit breakers up to 550 kV
High- and medium-voltage GIS (Gas-Insulated Switchgear)
Metal-clad switchgear
Circuit switchers
Disconnect switches
Fused cutouts
Station service switchgear
Station surge arresters
Education and Professional Requirements
Registered Professional Engineer (.) or Professional Geoscientist (.) with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC) or another jurisdiction with eligibility for registration with EGBC.
Prior to starting the assignment the selected candidate must have their own sole practitioner Permit to Practice or access to their firms Permit to Practice with EGBC.
Work will be performed under BC Hydros Professional Practice Management Plan Quality Management Pillar.
The engineer must apply their own or their firms Permit to Practice number to work that is sealed by the registrant.
BC Hydro retains all project documentation produced during the assignment in accordance with EGBC bylaws.
BC Hydro uses digital sign and seal technology and candidates may be required to subscribe to a digital seal service through Notarius.
Skills and Competencies
Strong knowledge of electrical utility substation design and high-voltage equipment.
Ability to lead engineering design tasks including scope schedule and cost management.
Experience providing technical direction and mentorship to junior engineers.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify value-adding engineering solutions and achieve consensus among stakeholders.
Effective communication skills including technical writing presentations and stakeholder collaboration.
Familiarity with CAD systems and utility drawing standards.
Ability to use industry design and analysis software.
Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word Excel PowerPoint).
Intermediate English communication skills in a professional environment.
Additional Requirements
Valid Class 5 drivers license is required.
