This is a high-impact leadership opportunity supporting the backbone of a major research universitys infrastructure. As Texas Tech continues to expand its research enterprise and pursue AAU aspirations the reliability efficiency and innovation of its utilities systems are more critical than ever.
The Associate Managing Director serves as a key leader within the Operations Division and the operational right hand to the Senior Managing Director overseeing complex utility systems that power the universitys academic research and campus life environments.Reporting tosenior leadership and managing a large technical team this role provides day-to-day leadership of plant operations while contributing to long-term strategy planning and continuous improvement initiatives.
This is not a hands-on operator role but a leadership position responsible for guiding teams informing decisions and helping shape the future direction of utilities operations at Texas Tech. Success in this role will come from building strong relationships with the team bringing forward thoughtful ideas and driving both day-to-day execution and long-term improvements across the operation.

Scope & Impact
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for central and satellite utility plants including steam chilled water RO water compressed air and gas systems
- Oversee two central heating and cooling plants satellite facilities and campus wide distribution networks
- Lead and develop a team of 40 plus professionals across instrumentation and plant maintenance
- Foster a culture of safety accountability innovation and continuous improvement
- Co-managean annual operating budget exceeding $20 million driving cost efficiency and sustainability
- Establish KPIs SOPs and performance metrics aligned with university goals
- Direct maintenance repairs capital improvements andlong-termasset planning
- Partner with planning design and construction teams on major capital projects
- Serve as a technical advisor on infrastructure investments and lifecycle planning
- Ensure compliance with all environmental safety and regulatory standards
- Act as liaison with regulatory agencies and oversee audits and risk management programs
- Lead emergency response coordination and serve on leadership on call rotation
- Build strong partnerships across campus stakeholders vendors and leadership teams
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in engineering or a related field or equivalent experience
- Minimum 3 years of leadership experience in utilities energy services or similar complex environments
- Deep technical knowledge of central utility systems including steam chilled water RO or deionized water HVAC controls and mechanical systems
- Experience managing large scale infrastructure operations and maintenance programs
- Demonstratedleadership in team development performance management and organizational planning
- Strong analytical anddecision makingcapabilities in complex operational environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree in engineering or related field
- Professional Engineer license in Texas
- 5 plus years of leadership experience in higher education or research environments
- Strong communicationskills with the ability to influence senior leadership and diverse stakeholders
- Experience with large scale system commissioning capital planning and continuous improvement initiatives
Compensation & Benefits
Theanticipatedsalary range for this position is$106000 to $120000 annually depending on experience.
