Department Overview
The Patent Attorney will work in an innovative and collaborative Motorola Solutions Patent Strategy and Operations (PS&O) group focused on a broad range of next generation public safety and enterprise technologies including but not limited to cloud computing data and video analytics artificial intelligence machine learning media processing and distribution call routing technologies call taking applications responder dispatch applications in-field mobile device applications in-vehicle mobile applications situational awareness applications digital evidence management systems and other technologies.
Job Description
The Patent Attorney will be responsible but not limited to the following:
Drafting a determined number of patent applications in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The number of applications will be determined based on the Patent Professionals experience level.
Prosecuting all personally drafted patent applications as well as other assigned patent applications in the USPTO and foreign patent offices.
Attending and participating in patent committee review meetings.
Being the lead patent contact for a particular business unit including handling client training and development understanding client business and existing patent portfolio(s) and guiding business and engineering professionals in generating high-value high-impact assets.
Identifying valuable disclosures tt would be additive to our existing portfolio.
Working with inventors to properly capture their ideas and inventions and submitting corresponding disclosures to the proper patent committee for consideration. Mentoring inventors with nascent ideas to help expand and develop them to meet the companys strategic portfolio needs.
Participating in innovation scrubs of product and/or software releases. Participating in invention mining / harvesting sessions.
Aiding in managing the current issued patent portfolio for their assigned business and the strategic focusing of that portfolio. This may include assisting with annuity decisions foreign filing decisions patent classifications portfolio analysis mining existing applications for additional coverage competitive analyses and identification of further ancillary strategic focus areas among other possibilities.
Working and interacting with other MSI Patent Attorneys Agents Engineers and Administrative Professionals on a daily basis both inside and outside of the PS&O group.
Overseeing outside counsel on certain aspects of outsourced cases.
Securing and preparing source code for registration with the United States Copyright Office for software distributions of strategic importance.
Some litigation / licensing support may also be occasionally requested by litigation / licensing leads in the broader legal and/or business unit groups.
Qualifications:
Seeking an Bachelors/Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering Systems or Computer Engineering Computer Science or comparable field of study.
Juris Doctor Degree.
Member in good standing of both the USPTO patent bar and at least one state bar.
Experience drafting editing and reviewing patent disclosures and patent applications in stated field(s) of expertise including at least 3 years of experience in a law firm or corporate law department environment.
Strong organization leadership and communication skills to draft and prosecute patent applications with high quality and efficiency.
Ability to present technical materials to technical and non-technical audiences.
Great interpersonal and team-work skills.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Knowledge of software development principles (OOP Agile Dev. etc.) programming languages (such as Python C# Swift) cloud development and deployment principles networking principles radio communications principles (LTE 4G Land Mobile Radio etc.) and/or telecommunications principles a plus.
Knowledge of various software technologies relating to security encryption data analytics mixed reality video / audio processing and analytics large language models and/or machine learning and convolutional neural networks (CNN)s a plus.
Demonstrated experience in successfully working in a multi-discipline legal and/or technical office and the ability to work with and across multiple legal and/or technical disciplines.
Extensive knowledge of U.S. patent laws and introduction to and/or knowledge of foreign (especially EP) patent laws.
Experience and/or awareness of U.S. and Intl export control requirements and/or processes.
Prior familiarity with USPTOs Patent Center and Assignment Center systems Google Apps for Business and/or Maxval Symphony IP Management preferred but not required.
Target Base Salary Range: $170000 - $180000 USD
Consistent with Motorola Solutions values and applicable law we provide the following information to promote pay transparency and equity. Pay within this range varies and depends on job-related knowledge skills and experience. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate.
