Job Purpose Statement/s:

The job of Athletic Trainer/Teacher provides on-site athletic event coverage including pre- and post-event requirements. Maintains appropriate quantities of first aid/athletic training supplies required for each event. The Athletic Trainer is responsible for the care prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Required to collaborate with a licensed physician in the treatment of athletic injuries.

Job Qualifications & Licensure:

  • Bachelors degree in athletic training or a related field such as Kinesiology or Sports Medicine (required)
  • Possess or ability to obtain a valid athletic trainer registration by the Oregon Health Authority/Health Licensing Office.
  • Possess or ability to obtain an Emergency Cardiac Care Certification including adult pediatric secondary rescuer AED airway obstruction and barrier devices.
  • Possess or ability to obtain certification as a Certified Wrestling Body Composition Assessor from the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA).
  • Knowledge of first aid practices injury prevention and therapeutic procedures.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students parents coaches and physicians.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Researches plans implements and ensures that appropriate action plans are in place to prevent athletic injury and illness and that these plans are in accordance with other established athletic policies procedures and state law.
  1. Conducts initial assessment of an athletes injury or illness to determine a professional diagnosis activity limitation or restrictions develop a treatment plan and/or to determine whether the athlete should be referred to physician(s) for further diagnostic testing and treatment.
  2. Serves as a resource for coaches on conditioning nutrition and the selection of appropriate team protective equipment and devices.
  3. Attends multisport athletic contests and practices as scheduled by agreement with the Athletic Director. Observes participating athletes to evaluate movement patterns and body mechanics that could predispose athletes to injury. Responds to injuries/illnesses that occur due to participation in activities and/or events.
  4. Provides emergency care and first aid including availability of necessary equipment communication procedures for emergency situations and prompt accurate triage.
  5. Serves as a liaison to parents coaches school staff and healthcare professionals regarding an individual athletes injury or illness.
  6. Provides education to coaches students and parents in the areas of sports injury prevention and care.
  7. Develop implement and maintain emergency action plans for practice and game locations specific to the assigned high school.
  8. Provides on-site rehabilitation services for athletic injuries using various therapeutic interventions and related equipment.
  9. Assesses athletes to evaluate the efficacy of treatment reports the progress to coaches and physicians when appropriate and makes modifications to the athletes treatment program as necessary.
  10. Maintains confidential accurate and complete student documentation as required by law district policy and administrative regulations including training records injury/accident reports treatment records home care instructions referrals rehabilitation progress notes and insurance information.
  11. Develops and maintains equipment inventory and supplies for the athletic training room adhering to budget provided.
  12. Schedules and administers pre-season neuropsychological testing for concussion management and helps interpret post-injury results.
  13. Responsible for concussion management including notifying school personnel documentation record-keeping and communicating with outside medical professionals and parents. Evaluates athletes readiness to play and provides participation clearances when necessary and warranted.
  14. Assesses wrestler body composition in conjunction with Oregons Wrestling Weight Monitoring Program to determine minimum wrestling weight.
  15. Provides athletic training room facilities rehabilitation and medical care access to student athletes with arrangements made by the Athletic Trainer.
  16. Ensures water or other appropriate hydration is available as agreed with Athletic Director following league protocol for visiting teams.
  17. Perform other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.
