Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test analyze and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design development construction deployment and operation. The expertise of the laboratories technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.
The Materials Science Department within the Space Materials Laboratory is seeking a well-qualified individual for the role of Research Associate Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE). In this role you will execute advanced Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) techniques on mission-critical launch vehicle and spacecraft components supporting senior technical staff in technique development and validation. You will contribute to mission assurance through hands-on inspections data collection and analysis and maintenance of laboratory NDI systems. This role involves direct support to programs for leading space agencies while gaining expertise in state-of-the-art NDI methods and materials characterization.

The selected candidate will be required to work full-time on-site at our facility in El Segundo CA.
What Youll Be Doing
- Perform non-destructive inspections on mission-critical launch vehicle and spacecraft components using ultrasonic testing eddy current acoustic microscopy and other advanced inspection techniques
- Operate and maintain NDI instrumentation including ultrasonic systems eddy current equipment acoustic microscopes thermography systems and associated test and measurement electronics
- Support applied research activities in materials characterization and NDI science through data collection signal analysis and documentation
- Contribute to mission assurance by conducting inspections analyzing measurement data and preparing technical reports for USSF NRO and commercial space programs
- Maintain laboratory organization equipment calibration records and inventory management to ensure operational readiness
- Collaborate with senior technical staff and cross-functional teams to support field evaluations failure investigations and technical assessments

What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements for Research Associate II - Materials Science Research:
- Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university programin Aerospace Engineering Materials Science Electrical Engineering Mechanical Engineering Physicsor related discipline(pursuing or conferred within last 12 months)
- 0-1 year of industry work experience
- Technical background in materials science physics or engineering including exposure to structural materials and the theory of non-destructive inspection techniques
- Practical laboratory experience performing non-destructive inspections using ultrasonic eddy current thermography or other NDI methods
- Experience handling materials and specimens with proper documentation and recording of test results
- Ability to troubleshoot calibrate and maintain analytical instrumentation
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

- Graduate-level research or project experience demonstrating independent problem-solving and technical depth in materials testing instrumentation or NDI methods
How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
- Measurement and signal processing skills using various programming languages i.e. Python C Labview etc.
- NDT/NDI Level I or Level II certification in one or more methods (UT ET PT MT IRT) through ASNT employer-based programs or equivalent certification bodies
