Stewardship of a 1400-acre campus
Oversight of 200 buildings and 5.5M square feet of facilities
Leadership of 160 facilities professionals
Executive oversight of facilities operations capital planning design & construction and utilities
Implementation of a newly approved campus physical master plan


The SAVP will play a key leadership role in advancing major campus initiatives while ensuring operational excellence across one of the CSU systems most dynamic campuses.

Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) playsa central rolein this progress stewarding the universitys physical environmentincluding more than 200 buildings and approximately 5.5 million gross square feet of facilities. With a team of approximately 160 employees FP&M oversees campus planning design and construction facilities operations utilities and sustainability initiatives that support the universitys mission and long-term strategic vision.

About this role:
Reporting to the Vice President for Administrative Affairs who also serves as the Chief Financial Officer the Senior Associate Vice President (SAVP) for Facilities Planning & Management provides executive leadership for the universitys comprehensive facilities enterprise. This role oversees facilities and maintenance capital planning design and construction business services and campus physical planning.

This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for shaping the long-term stewardship and development of Cal Poly Pomonas physical campus. The SAVP leads a large and diverse workforce guides a significant capital program addressing more than$2 billionin deferred maintenance capital improvement and infrastructure needs and partners closely with university leadership to ensure that facilities planning supports the institutions academic mission student success and operational excellence.

The role also carries a unique responsibility: oversight of the universitys water treatment plantone of only two such facilitiesoperatedwithin the CSU systempositioning this leader at the forefront of infrastructure stewardship and sustainability innovation on campus.

Scope & Impact

Leadership and Strategic Direction

  • Provide executive leadership and strategic direction for Facilities Planning & Management ensuring alignment with the universitys mission and long-term institutional priorities.
  • Lead a high-performing organization of approximately 160facilitiesprofessionals across operations capital planning design and construction and business services.
  • Establish departmental goals performance expectations and operational standards that support service excellence safety and accountability.
  • Guide organizational planning workforce development succession planning and recruitment to sustain a best-in-class facilities organization.
  • Promote an open communication culture that encourages feedback and drives positive departmental growth.
  • Apply strategic understanding of interdepartmental functions to drive alignment remove operational bottlenecks and advance efficiency across the organization.

Facilities Operations Maintenance and Sustainability Oversight

  • Oversee campus-widefacilitiesoperations maintenance and grounds services supporting more than 200 buildings across a 1400-acre campus.
  • Ensure effective preventive and corrective maintenance programs using the universitys computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Direct strategies for addressing deferred maintenance and facility renewal through capital planning and operational initiatives.
  • Promote sustainability initiatives related tofacilitiessystems utilities fleet and campus infrastructure.
  • Foster a culture of safety regulatory compliance emergency preparedness and responsive service.

Capital Planning Design and Construction

  • Provide executive oversight of all capital planning design and construction initiatives across the university.
  • Lead development and execution of long-range facilities strategies aligned with enrollment growth academic priorities and campus master planning.
  • Oversee project delivery including procurement contractor management design review budgeting scheduling and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure successful delivery of capital projects whilemaintainingquality safety cost control and risk mitigation.

Campus Physical Planning and Capital Program Development

  • Direct the development and ongoing implementation of the Campus Physical Master Plan.
  • Lead preparation and submission of the universitys Five-Year Capital Outlay Program.
  • Coordinate space planning initiatives and oversee campus space data reporting and facilities planning documentation.
  • Serve as a key liaison with the CSU Chancellors Office Board of Trustees and regulatory agenciesregardingcapital planning and facilities development.

Financial Stewardship and Business Operations

  • Provide financial oversight of FP&M budgets resource allocation and long-range financial planning.
  • Oversee business services including procurement human resources coordination inventory andfacilitiesservice workflows.
  • Ensure strong fiscal stewardship financial transparency and compliance with CSU policies and procedures.

Organizational Excellence and Continuous Improvement

  • Champion data-driven decision-making performance metrics and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Implement process improvements and Lean methodologies to strengthen operational efficiency and service delivery.
  • Establish performance dashboards and reporting tools to track service levels and organizational outcomes.

Campus Collaboration and External Engagement

  • Serve as a trusted partnertouniversity leadership collaborating with academic and administrative units to support teaching research and campus operations.
  • Represent the university with local state and federal agencies professional organizations and CSU systemwide groups.
  • Maintain strong relationships with contractors consultants and external partners involved in campus facilities initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited institution ideally in architecture engineering planning or related discipline.
  • Valid CA drivers license
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in facilities management capital project management or related field.
  • At least 5 years of supervisory or executive leadership experience managing large teams and complex operations.
  • A high levelof personal integrity ethics initiative and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Extensivefacilitiesservices management capitaldesignand construction experience preferably in a collective bargaining environment.
  • Demonstrated successadvisingsenior leadership on strategic investments in physical-plant assets and in the resources necessary tooptimizethem in a complex environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in leading a facilities-management services unit and directing a successful capital project delivery program within higher education or a similarly complex institution.
  • Masters degree in engineering architecture business facilitiesmanagementor related field/discipline.
  • Familiarity with LEED-certified building criteria and practices preferablydemonstratedby an earned LEED credential.
  • A valid California Architects license or Professional Engineers license.

Compensation

  • Theanticipatedsalary range for this position is $220000 $236256 annuallycommensuratewith experience.

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) bargaining unit M80. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum$6891 and maximum$22119 per month. Please refer to the anticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for this particular position.
