As a Principal Auditor you will oversee and conduct independent and objective audits of the States annual financial statements and compliance with Federal program regulations. The work done at our Office helps manage risk and ensures funds are spent legally and properly.

Mission Statement: The Office of the State Auditor provides independent assurance that Maine government is accountable to the people. We examine whether funds are spent legally and properly and that data and systems are secure. OSA auditors perform their work in accordance with Government Auditing Standards. Job Duties of a Principal Auditor position with the Office of the State Auditor:

  • Assisting the Senior Leadership Team in planning designing and administering financial and compliance audit assignments and other projects
  • Performing and overseeing audit team completion of complex audit assignments and projects including direct supervision of Senior and Staff Auditors
  • Interpreting and applying State and federal laws rules and regulations and changes in accounting principles to assign audit work
  • Independently evaluating performance to identify anindividuals professional development and training needs
  • Assisting senior management in developing new uses of technology in the audit process
  • Applying sound judgment and performing work independently

The background of well-qualified candidates will demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Expertise regarding generally accepted accounting principles (FASB/GASB)
  • Expertise regarding AICPA/GAO auditing standards for governmental organizations
  • Expertise applying modern management principles practices and techniques
  • Expertise applying State and federal laws rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of diverse operational environments of governmental entities
  • Ability to interact with all levels of government personnel and to effectively represent the Office
  • Ability to plan organize assign and direct audit activities including continual assessment of audit risk and adjustments to audit plans as necessary
  • Ability to review the work of staff for accuracy completeness and conformance to auditing standards
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate complex accounting transactions information technology systems and systems of internal control
  • Ability to interpret complex laws and technical information
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in accounting Business Administration or related field

-AND-

Eight (8) years progressively responsible auditing experience

-OR-

six (6) years of auditing experience directly related to the government environment; experience must include at least three (3) years of supervisory experience.

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • are certified as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or Certified Information System Auditor (CISA).
  • have a CPA designation or those who have made progress obtaining this certification.

Agency Information: The Office of the State Auditor is an innovative organization that acts as the independent auditor for the State of Maine. The Office works with Maine State Government agencies to complete the States annual Single Audit comprised of the financial statement and Federal compliance audits. The Office has the statutory authority to audit all accounts and other financial records of State government including any counties municipalities and any organization institution or other entity receiving or requesting an appropriation or grant from State government.
