Art Teacher – Costume Design & Construction

Job Summary
The Costume Design & Construction Art Teacher is responsible for delivering a comprehensive hands-on instructional program that integrates artistic design principles with technical costume construction skills. This role supports the schools performing arts productions by teaching students the skills needed for the full costume design processfrom concept development to fabricationwhile fostering creativity collaboration and professional-level craftsmanship.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum Development
- Design and implement a sequenced curriculum in costume design drawing for stage textiles and garment construction
- Teach foundational and advanced techniques including patternmaking sewing draping fabric selection and costume rendering
- Integrate art history cultural context and theatrical storytelling into design instruction
- Differentiate instruction to support a range of skill levels and learning styles
Production Support
- Collaborate with directors and other production staff to design and execute costumes for school performances
- Supervise students in costume crew forperformances
- Manage costume fittings alterations and maintenance throughout production cycles
Studio & Lab Management
- Maintain a safe organized costume shop and classroom environment
- Oversee inventory of fabrics tools sewing machines and costume stock
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of equipment
Student Development
- Mentor students in building portfolios for college or career pathways in costume design theater or fashion
- Encourage creative problem-solving collaboration and time management
- Provide constructive critique and assessment of student work
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelors degree in Costume Design Theater Arts Fashion Design Art Education or related field
- CT Teaching certification
- Demonstrated experience in costume design and garment construction
- Proficiency in sewing patternmaking and costume production techniques
Preferred:
- Experience working in theater film or live performance costume production
- Knowledge of digital design tools (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite or costume rendering software)
- Experience teaching in a performing arts or magnet school setting
