The Opportunity

We are seeking a creative and highly organized Food Technology Teacher to join our Design & Technology this role you will be responsible for far more than just cookingyou will be teaching the science of nutrition the chemistry of food preparation and the vital importance of food security and sustainability in a coastal urban environment.
The Department
You will join a dedicated team that treats the kitchen as a sophisticated laboratory where students explore the functional and chemical properties of ingredients.
The school features modern high-spec food preparation rooms equipped with industrial-grade ovens digital temperature probes and specialized areas for food styling and sensory analysis.
We follow a curriculum that balances culinary skill with theoretical depth covering topics such as macro and micro-nutrients food provenance and the diverse dietary requirements of a global population.
We benefit from Portsmouths local industry often inviting local chefs and nutritionists to run workshops and demonstrating the Farm to Fork (or Port to Plate) journey.
Core Responsibilities
Curriculum Delivery: Teaching Food & Nutrition across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE/Vocational) focusing on the NEA (Non-Exam Assessment) tasks which require high-level technical skill and detailed written evaluation.
Food Science & Nutrition: Guiding students through the Science of Cookingfrom the denaturation of proteins to the aeration of fatsensuring they understand the why behind every technique.
Health & Safety Leadership: Maintaining the highest standards of food hygiene (HACCP) and lab safety ensuring all students are trained in the safe use of equipment and cross-contamination prevention.
Practical Mastery: Demonstrating a wide range of high-level skills including filleting fish making complex sauces (mother sauces) and intricate pastry work.
Sustainability Advocacy: Leading projects on food waste reduction and the Great Portsmouth Bake Off to foster school-wide engagement with healthy sustainable eating habits.
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a teacher who is as comfortable with a spreadsheet of nutritional data as they are with a chefs knife. Requirements include:
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Food Technology Nutrition or a related discipline.
Technical Proficiency: A high level of practical culinary skill and the ability to teach complex technical tasks to groups of 20 students simultaneously.
Organization: Exceptional classroom management and the ability to manage complex ingredient ordering stock rotation and budget constraints.
Passion for Nutrition: A commitment to teaching students about the link between diet health and long-term well-being.
