The Opportunity
Basildon is a town that serves as a perfect living textbook for Geography from its history as a post-war New Town to its proximity to the diverse ecosystems of the Thames Estuary. We are seeking an energetic Geography Teacher to join our Humanities faculty. You will be responsible for helping students navigate the complexities of the 21st centuryfrom climate change and tectonic hazards to the shifting patterns of global trade and urban regeneration.
The Department
You will join a department that champions Fieldwork First ensuring students move beyond the classroom to collect primary data in the local Essex landscape and beyond.
The department is equipped with modern GIS (Geographic Information Systems) software high-resolution satellite imagery tools and traditional cartographic resources.
We follow a curriculum that balances physical processes with human impact emphasizing the Basildon Contextexploring how local urban planning reflects broader national trends in migration and industry.
We have a strong track record of success at GCSE and A-Level with Geography being a popular choice for students looking toward careers in environmental science town planning and international development.
Core Responsibilities
Dynamic Lesson Delivery: Teaching across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 with the opportunity to lead A-Level modules on Global Systems and Global Governance or Water and Carbon Cycles.
Fieldwork Coordination: Organizing and leading local and residential field trips teaching students how to use clinometers flow meters and environmental quality surveys.
Contemporary Case Studies: Keeping the curriculum live by integrating current eventssuch as recent volcanic eruptions international climate summits (COP) or local coastal erosion issues at Southend-on-Sea.
Data Literacy: Teaching students how to interpret complex maps graphs and population pyramids preparing them for the high-level analytical demands of the AQA or Edexcel specifications.
Sustainability Advocacy: Leading the schools Eco-Council or Geography Society promoting sustainable practices within the school community.
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a global thinker who can make a map speak to a classroom. Requirements include:
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Geography Environmental Science or a related discipline.
Subject Passion: A deep interest in both human and physical geography and a commitment to staying current with geographic research.
Classroom Management: The ability to foster a respectful environment where students feel comfortable debating global issues and different cultural perspectives.
Technical Skill: Proficiency in using digital mapping tools and a creative approach to visualizing geographic data.
