GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Supervisor of Science provides leadership to Roanoke City Public Schools (RCPS) efforts to advance science education for all students K-12. The Supervisor assists in developing reviewing and revising curriculum and assessments aligned to the Virginia Science Standards of Learning. This position supports teachers and administrators through professional development coaching and providing appropriately aligned resources to foster student academic success.
ESSENTIAL TASKS
The following duties are normal for this position. - Monitors the instructional program provided by science classroom teachers and provides ongoing support to help teachers improve performance and achieve objectives;
- Supports teachers in ensuring the alignment of their lesson plans and instruction to the appropriate Virginia Science Standards of Learning and Curriculum Framework;
- Provides division-level leadership regarding curriculum pacing and resources to support classroom instruction with a deep understanding of the progression of science knowledge skills and scientific and engineering practices as defined in the Virginia Science Standards of Learning;
- Coordinates division-wide professional development classroom-embedded professional development and topic-specific training sessions for science teachers;
- Assists in establishing departmental curriculum objectives and implements a plan for the accomplishment of the objectives;
- Works with new teachers to ensure they have the materials and competencies necessary for success;
- Assumes responsibility for ensuring that appropriate science instructional resources laboratory materials and textbooks are ordered in a timely manner;
- Assists in the collection review and submission of all required information for state and federal reporting related to science;
- Observes classroom science instruction regularly and provides follow-up consultation and written non-evaluative feedback to teachers and administrators;
- Maintains a working relationship with community stakeholders to support science instruction and enrichment opportunities;
- Stays informed regarding educational innovations and trends in science education and implements new strategies appropriate for the divisions student population based on data;
- Coordinates the gathering selecting and analysis of data with respect to the science program;
- Collaborates within the department and with division-level team members to support school department and district initiatives and projects;
- Assists in the preparation of the annual science program evaluation and budget as required;
- Maintains clear and accurate budget expenditures in compliance with current division financial accounting procedures and procurement guidelines;
- Ensures that budget funds are expended appropriately and used for their intended purposes;
- Coordinates and oversees the division-wide science fair including collaboration with schools teachers and community partners;
- Identifies and supports high-quality science partnerships enrichment opportunities and outreach programs;
- Takes initiative and proactively identifies opportunities to strengthen ones team and organization;
- Works well in a fast-paced environment; demonstrates flexibility and adaptability with a sense of urgency and zeal for ensuring every youth in RCPS experiences success in college career and civic readiness;
- Models professionalism engages in reflection self-led continuous improvement seeks feedback and provides constructive feedback to colleagues;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must possess a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of curriculum instruction and assessment; comprehensive knowledge of science content; and effective skills in textbook and resource selection curriculum development and budget development. Must have the ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solutions and solve problems; guide and train teachers in effective science instructional techniques and laboratory practices; develop and present ideas effectively both orally and in written form; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators teachers staff and the general public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Masters Degree in Education Administration endorsement in Science and a minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience. Certification in Administration and Supervision PreK-12-Central Office Only or Administration and Supervision PreK-12 is required.
