The College of Arts & Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for an Administrator to support three interdisciplinary research and training centers within the Division of Social Sciences.

  • The Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences (CSSS) advances research at the intersection of statistics and social science supports graduate and undergraduate instruction in quantitative methods and provides statistical consulting to the UW community.

  • The Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology (CSDE) is a federally funded population research center with more than 75 years of history supporting demographic research and training across disciplines including administration of major NIH-funded center and training grants.

  • The Center for Social Science Computation and Research (CSSCR) provides computing infrastructure data services and consulting support for social science research and instruction across the University.

The Administrator oversees the day-to-day administrative financial and operational functions of CSSS CSDE and CSSCR. This leadership role is responsible for managing approximately $6.7 million in annual revenue supervising 4.5 FTE (five staff members) and coordinating complex activities across research instruction grants management and service operations.

The Administrator serves as a strategic partner to Center Directors faculty leaders and campus stakeholders ensuring efficient operations compliance with university and sponsor requirements and alignment with each centers academic and research mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Finance : Responsible for the annual five year planning for each center using the Adaptive tool within Workday Finance. Meet regularly with center directors (and other core team members as needed) to develop spending plans-for the centers broadly but also for specific events appointments etc. Provide monthly reports to Center Directors for all non-grant revenues and expenditures. Meet monthly with Center Directors to review reports identify financial trends and recommend expenditure changes or reductions if necessary. Hold the security role of Cost Center Manager in Workday Finance for each of the three centers and approve review and monitor expenses. Oversee financial processes related to core faculty course buyouts and instructional replacement funding including monitoring related financial activity and coordinating communication across departments and administrative units.

  • HR : Serve as the HR Manager for all three centers - submit quarterly payroll rosters to the Colleges shared environment. Run reports each bi-monthly to ensure employees pay is correct and charged to correct resource in each center. Support center faculty with requests to hire research staff and graduate students (academic student employees). Coordinate with affiliate units to arrange Academic Service Employees (TAs) for courses. Negotiate funding splits for courses joint with CSSS. Coordinate salaries for CSSS instructors. Manage hiring processes for core faculty instructors and staff in collaboration with participating academic units as needed.

  • Supervision : Manage a staff of five individuals (4.5 FTE): grants manager budget fiscal analyst program coordinator (2 FTE) and program assistant (0.5 FTE) These staff are responsible for a variety of tasks including grants management time scheduling curricular operations support research and teaching assistant appointments and general administrative support including website and newsletters management and oversight listservs maintenance and oversight and office management. Hire as necessary assess workload to balance duties and activities across the three centers. Evaluate work train and manage corrective action if necessary.

  • Grant Pre- and Post Award : Provide collaborative leadership for the management of the P2C and T32 training grants for CSDE working closely with staff to ensure smooth administration of center and trainee requirements seedgrant processes and financial commitments. Partnerwith team members to support monthly financial reporting trainee deficit monitoring coordination with home units and management of external commitments from partner colleges. Workwith staff to steward Workday Finance grantmanagement activities and contributes to planning and budgeting for travel and conferences associated with the grants. Collaboratively ensure that grant operations across the three centers comply with sponsor guidelines and that PIs meet required effort and reporting deadlines.

  • Strategic leadership : Coordination communication and planning for and with each center. Facilitating Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) related to cross-unit and cross-curricular agreements as well as data use and facilities sharing.

  • Special Projects: As assigned by center directors.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Business Administration Public Administration Higher Education Administration or a related field

  • Five years of progressively responsible administrative or operational experience

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements such as a license certification and/or registration.

Additional Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience managing $2 million or more in annual budgets

  • Experience supervising hiring and managing staff

  • Advanced proficiency with Excel including pivot tables

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with Workday Finance or similar enterprise financial systems

  • Experience managing sponsored research and grants administration in a higher education or research setting

Compensation Benefits and Position Details

Pay Range Minimum:

$93600.00 annual

Pay Range Maximum:

$103200.00 annual
