Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison International Division anticipates an opening for an Assistant International Safety and Security Director (Assistant ISSD). This position will begin work on or about 1 July 2026.

The Assistant International Safety and Security Director will be based in the International Division and is a full-time appointment (FTE). This position reports to the UW-Madison International Safety and Security Director (ISSD).

The Assistant International Safety and Security Director assists and supports the International Safety and Security Director (ISSD) in all matters related to assigned capacities and duties. Serves as a critical resource for faculty members graduate students undergraduates postdocs and staff engaged in international activities. Coordinates actions in direct safety and security support to travelers (before during and after travel) including helping manage international crises in coordination with other campus offices and resources.

The assistant director supports the administration coordination and promotion of a comprehensive international safety and security preparedness strategy in the following essential areas:

Policy review revision and administration

Strategic risk assessment and crisis preparedness

Coordinating internal communications and shared resources/services Supporting research analysis and coordination during crisis management Review and assessment of pre-departure safety and security planning training and resources.

Responsibilities

Serves as a resource to the academic and administrative units that sponsor travel to address policy questions and practical issues associated with safety and security

Assists the International Safety and Security Director (ISSD) to extend support services to travelers including updating and maintaining an accessible ISSD website

Collaborates with and supports the International Safety and Security Director (ISSD) in proposing developing socializing and implementing travel-related policies

Collaborates with and supports the International Safety and Security Director (ISSD) to strengthen partnerships with other administrative units supporting university travel abroad

May act as a point of contact or coordinator for travel-related safety and security events and crises determined by the International Safety and Security Director (ISSD) in support of campus units.

Tasks

• Review assess and offer revision to UW-Madison policies guidance and communications relevant to international safety and security practices

• Support the ISSD in administering the UW-Madison International Resources Guidelines and Policies (International Travel Policy) and related processes

• Support administration of the University International Travel Committee (UITC) in its operations

• Monitor and analyze a variety of resources to remain current with world news and events

• Research subject- and location-specific security dynamics in international environments to assess risks to the safety and security of university students and employees.

• Respond to questions from travelers and supporting university offices and organizations

• Review and assess the utility of safety and security resources for campus application

• Assist in tracking and maintaining data related to health safety and security incidents abroad

• Maintain a working knowledge of the UW System international health medical and evacuation insurance policy and offer a knowledgeable response to related questions

• Maintain the ISSD safety and security website; update and revise content

• Represent UW-Madison in related professional meetings webinars and conferences

• Support the ISSD in coordinating actions protocols and communications during a crisis that impacts students and/or employees and requires coordination of campus & external resources

• Review and assess travel safety and security pre-departure training content

• Other projects or duties as assigned

Key Job Responsibilities:

• May act as a point of contact or coordinator for travel-related incidents and crisesas determined by the International Safety and Security Director (ISSD) in support of campus units

• Serves as a resource to the academic and administrative units that sponsor travel to address policy and practical issues

• Assists the International Safety and Security Director (ISSD) to extend support services to travelers

• Collaborates with campus leaders in proposing developing socializing and implementing travel-related policies

• Collaborates with and supports the International Safety and Security Director (ISSD) to strengthen partnerships with administrative units supporting travel including those related to health and wellness travel booking and registration finances research environmental health and safety visas and IT security

Compensation:

Minimum annual salary of $72000 depending on qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Experiences in researching assessing and reporting global security events and risk trends

using open-source and commercial intelligence resources

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Excellent analytical skills applying qualitative and quantitative methodologies

Preferred Qualifications:

Experiences with higher education study abroad operations and/or experiential learning abroad

Experiences with enterprise travel safety and security operations

Education:

Required:

Bachelors Degree in any field of study

Preferred:

Masters Degree in Security Studies Strategic Studies International Relations International Public Affairs History Political Science Regional Studies International Education or a demonstrably related area; or a professional degree
