Job Summary

Title: Teaching Assistant (TA) Summer College Readiness Program -High School University (HSU)
Reports to: Social Worker College and Career Readiness
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Employment Status: Part-time
  • Half-day 12-20 hours per week
  • Morning course: 8:45 am 12:45 pm
  • Afternoon course: 12:45 pm - 4:45 pm
Hourly Rate: $16.00
Work Location: In-person Carlow University or CCAC Allegheny Campus
Training Dates: June 9 - June 11 2026
Program Dates: June 16 August 7 2026

Summer High School U Program: Overview
The High School University (HSU) program is designed to address systemic challenges for low-income students accessing college level courses and career work related experiences while in high school. The HSU programs provide high school students in the Pittsburgh region the opportunity to earn free college credits participate in work related experiences and receive college and career readiness support.

Under the supervision of the Director of Programs the Teaching Assistant works with the Social Worker Case Manager TA team members and the college professor to design support materials and non-academic supports that will build students academic understandings skills college readiness and social-emotional intelligence. The course and recitation sessions are in-person on the college campus (Carlow University & CCAC Allegheny Campus). The Teaching Assistants will work together to co-lead tutoring sessions before or after class and during the recitation hours.

Our work culture is collaborative student-centered and community forward. Neighborhood Learning Alliance is looking for a candidate that can co-lead tutoring sessions with team members possess a growth mindset effectively manage schedules inspire students and has a strong grasp of subject matter.
  • Team Model: Teaching Assistants work together as collaborative teams to support high school students
  • Tutoring sessions: Before class after class or on non-course days Teaching Assistants co-lead tutoring and academic skill building activities.

Essential Functions:
  • Work effectively with the NLA team TAs and professor
  • Demonstrate academic competence in the subject area
  • Review syllabus topics and assignments
  • Assist students with homework projects test preparation papers research and other academic tasks
  • Conduct practice tests to track progress identify areas of improvement and help set goals for exam preparation
  • Collaborate effectively with the university and the organization to increase student performance
  • Provide students positive and constructive feedback
  • Offer feedback on progress to students parents and teachers where appropriate
  • Maintain an orderly and organized learning environment and ensure that students are on-task
  • Lead small groups of students in homework essay writing and editing workshops etc.
  • Maintain a growth mindset toward student learning and teaching practice
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Subject matter proficiency in the college course of interest
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to clearly explain challenging concepts provide instructions and deliver feedback
  • Patience and compassion for students as they develop skills and improve their performance
  • Ability to connect and interact with high school students from diverse populations
  • Ability to take supervision and correction constructively
  • Ability to positively supervise students
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft and Google platforms
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Have reliable transportation or able to access college campus
