Surgical Technician Apprentice CST Apprenticeship Program

The CST Apprenticeship Program is an entry-level training job reserved for surgical services (surgical technology track) students.

The incumbent will be promoted to Surgical Technician once the course is completed and Surgical Technologist/Cert once the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) is awarded. The Surgical Technician Apprentice must commit to working at TMH for two years after becoming a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).

The Surgical Technician Apprentice will receive training to:

• Clean decontaminate inspect assemble and sterilize reusable operating room (O.R.) medical devices.
• Provide general non-technical assistance to nursing staff members.
• Assist surgeon by passing instrumentation and holding retractors.
• Establish and protect the sterile field during procedures.
• Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (when necessary).

• RN/Nurse Manager
• RN/Assistant Nurse Manager
• CST Program Director

Supervises:

• None

Required Education:

• High school diploma (or equivalent) at hire.
• Must complete Apprenticeship Course (2000 hours) within twelve (12) months post-hire.

• None

Additional Information:

• Upon completion of the 12- month course the incumbent will be promoted to Surgical Technician.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification is obtained by successfully passing credentialing administered by National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
• Surgical Technician Apprentice must commit to working at TMH for two years after becoming a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
