Minimum Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time or equivalent part-time technical experience in the construction inspection and/or alteration of construction projects such as highways buildings bridges tunnels sewers waterways dams and parks or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions

I. An Associates degree with a major in civil engineering civil engineering technology or construction technology may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.*

II. A Bachelors or higher Degree with a major in civil engineering civil engineering technology architecture or structural architectural or sanitary engineering may be substituted for the required experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the requirements actually completed.

SPEICAL REQUIREMENTS: Based on assignment possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operators License.

Position Summary

Incumbents of positions in this series inspect the construction of highways buildings bridges dams water or sewage systems tunnels and waterways for conformance with plans and specifications; conduct tests on construction materials; survey construction sites; maintain records of construction operations; and perform related work as required.

The basis purpose of this work is to oversee the construction practices used on various sites and to enforce compliance with plans specifications and all applicable laws rules regulations policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Supervises and inspects construction projects work for compliance with sound engineering principles and practices and contractual standards.

• Performs on sight Inspections of ongoing construction and repair activity on assigned project.

• Follows through on inspections to ensure that necessary maintenance repair and/or replacement procedures are undertaken.

• Provides engineering data for civil engineering projects such as buildings or highway construction in order to plan design and construct structures and facilities such as buildings bridges roads and drainage.

• Performs calculations and/or checks computations made by others.

• Test materials used in the production of bituminous concrete pavements and cement concrete to ensure compliance with relevant standards.

• Prepare all related documents (daily reports pay slips sketches etc.) including data entry into correct computer programs.

• Performs related duties as required.

This position does not have a hybrid schedule and may be required to work nights weekends and/or holidays based on project assignment.

This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5000) signing bonus (Signing Bonus) if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employees first paycheck. 2) $2000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employees probationary period.
