Position Overview:
Western State Hospital is seeking a full time HIM Director to plan organize and direct the management of the Health Information Management Department and establish and maintain systems that insure that Medical Records Avatar Database Utilization Review are maintained in accordance with Western State Hospital (WSH) Department of Behavioral Health (DBHDS) The Joint Commission CMS and/or other applicable external authority.


Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the requirements of the performance planning and evaluation system are met and evaluations are completed by established deadlines with proper documentation
- Performance issues are addressed and documented as they occur
- Develop Policies and Procedures that allow optimum performance of Health Information Management (HIM) Services
- Participate collaboratively in teleconferences that relate to the new electronic health record (Millennium) and provide thoughtful input based on medical record best practices
- Supervise Health Information Management (HIM) employees at WSH and schedule new work assignments as the need arises
- Prepare annual budget requests for WSH taking into consideration staffing equipment and educational needs of the Health Information Management Department
- Interface with the Census Management Committee and Director of Social Services by reporting utilization review data on a routine basis based on needs of the committee
- Oversee release of information in the Health Information Management Department and ensures that information released is in accordance with all state and federal requirements
- Develop and implements policies and procedures for all aspects of creation maintenance and storage of the medical record following all regulatory requirements

Minimum Qualifications

- High School diploma or equivalent
- Extensive supervisory experience in Health Information or closely related field
- Hands on experience with ICD-10 Coding
- Considerable knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the preparation and maintenance of medical records and state and federal requirements regarding the release of medical information and of medical information systems and classification systems
- Working knowledge and experience with medical terminology medical records coding systems CMS and TJC standards
- Proficiency in working with electronic health record systems and data analytics
- Ability to interpret complex laws rules and regulations governing the maintenance of medical records implement training programs regarding the preparation maintenance and security of medical records supervise the work of others; work with medical and administrative staff; and communicate effectively; both orally and in writing
- Working knowledge of HIPAA Privacy Regulations

- Associates or bachelors degree in Health Information Management or closely related field
- Advanced education in medical coding medical terminology or related field
- RHIT RHIA CHPS CPC
